Miss Helen George of Graettinger won first place in the vocal class at the Northwest Iowa district contest in Sac City and advances to the state contest in Iowa City on April 25. Teammate Mina Dickinson of Ruthven won the piano division. both will represent the area at state level. The event featured nine other vocal competitors and four winners per district across three classes and an overall.

Ruth Wicks, 12, seventh grade, won first in both written and oral spelling in Emmet County rural schools contest held in Estherville on Friday April 17. Miss Wicks and teacher Miss Hamilton earn congratulations from District No. 9 patrons. Wicks will represent Emmet County at the interstate spelling contest in Omaha on Saturday May 6.
