Apple Disease Cornered San Jose Scale in Iowa Counties
Fenton of the Iowa Agricultural Experiment Station notes San Jose scale has been confined to eight southeastern Iowa counties. Control options include liquid lime sulfur sprays timed before bud break, with large orchards using 60 gallon water barrels and seven pounds per barrel. For few trees, mix one part lime sulfur to seven parts water. Heavy infestations may require a standard spray oil as a last resort, not recommended for peach trees. Dry lime sulfur and sumner sulfur alone are ineffective. The spray also helps control other scales, and infested trees show thrifty decline with thousands of encrusted gray scales on bark.
