Value of heavy seed outs
A study by H. E. Krueger shows heavy seed markedly increases oat yields. At Ontario station, heavy seed outproduced light seed by 104 bushels per acre in year one to three, and 22.4 bushels per acre in years four to six, while weight per bushel also rose from 2.2 to 9.6 pounds, signaling a clear benefit to thorough farming and sowing only heavy goat oats.

Threshed oats resist insect attack due to their thick smooth hull.

Grains like oats soften in the stack if not fully cured, causing heat and a musty odor that animals may reject unless hunger drives them.
