State bills rename holidays and add Herbert Hoover Day

The 63rd General Assembly sets observance dates for three new holidays and designates Herbert Hoover Day on the Sunday nearest August 10 starting 1971. It keeps major holidays fixed and notes Easter dating basics. A local reader reports a 90 year old resident, and a Social Security contact schedule is provided for Emmetsburg Estherville Spencer and Graettinger areas.

Graettinger students shine in Swea City music contest

Graettinger High School music students earned four firsts and four seconds at Swea City. Ruth Frick captured two top ratings in contralto solo and clarinet. the clarinet quartet also rated first. Dorene Larsen, baritone sax soloist, qualified for state. Graettinger teachers were reelected. several new contracts signed. A kindergarten will be added this fall. The Hampson family sold their Graettinger residence. Campbell plans to move in May and work at Pearl Harbor. Snow from April 3 vanished by April 8 while a Missouri man lost nearly $20 in a traffic mishap. Honorees Mr. and Mrs. Fred Rasmussen of Extra celebrated 67 years of marriage February 22.

Three Nebraskans Die After Rifle Hits Power Insulator

Kenneth Moore of the Iowa Electric Cooperatives explains the Nebraska crash was not a freak accident. A rifle bullet shattered a distribution insulator eight miles southeast of Norfolk, igniting a car and killing three Northeastern Nebraska students, while a fourth escaped injury.
