A Saturday flag raising in Grabill drew a large crowd as citizens showed patriotism. Six young men stepped forward to enlist in company B of Fort Wayne, marking a notable moment in the town’s history.
Grabill drew 500 plus spectators for a community event featuring a daring pole climb by Howard Klopfenstein without aids. The program opened with America sung by the crowd and Rev. C M Holle peter of Robinson Chapel delivering forceful remarks. Captain Hayes Smrill spoke on enlistment as the flag rose and Star Spangled Banner and cannon salute marked the moment, with Albert Egly noting local turnout and efforts.
Harlan to host a week long chautauqua arising from the Purdue Short Course held last winter. The sister town’s event promises another strong feature with a splendid program for attendees. A writer jokes the war will end in six weeks before snow flies, noting past delays and cheerful optimism.

During a Friday storm the bell tower of the Missionary church was struck by lightning, tearing bricks and plaster in the vestibule.
