Voters faced wind and rain as polls opened at 6 am across ten precincts. Democrats express confidence in Alderman for mayor and Vesey for marshal amid damp streets and weather driven disruption. Returns expected by 9 pm at multiple locations. Other cities show mixed results with Greene, Darrow, and Fogarty leading in respective races.
Samuel Oaks of Goshen, part of an extra Lake Shore section gang near Millersburg depot, was seriously hurt when a raised pick struck his back. The injury penetrated about one and a half inches. Oak's condition will be reassessed in a couple of days. Frank Woodruff, not blamed, is in Millersburg. Oaks lies under Dr. Irwin care.
Walker Whiteside headlines the last regular traction show of the season at the Bucklen in Elkhart with Grace George possibly joining Under Southern Skies at the Grand Opera House Chicago. Carpenter plans spring engagements and a New York City book for 1902 03. The season ends as the best financially to date with Maude Adams theater receipts near 1000 dollars in South Bend last night.
Wind and rain toppled shade trees and damaged signs in Goshen. Ed Overlease narrowly escaped injury when a large limb broke from a tree near the Noble residence on East Lincoln Avenue as he drove the Hotel Hascall bus to the depot. A second shower soaked polling place workers around 8 o'clock and rubber casts were in high demand.
Indiana Republican congressmen discussed attending the dedication of the Indiana soldiers and sailors monument on May 15. They will not attend the dedication, though all but one found time for the state convention, which demanded a week away from the capital.
Frank Phillips, a 30 year old farmer from near Westville LaPorte County, disappeared Sunday after leaving to check his cows. He was last seen at 4 PM and reportedly had frictions with workers on the Cincinnati and Richmond railroad. He carried $125. Authorities fear foul play.

The last regular council meeting was brief with little business. Mayor Deahl called order. Swank and Lowry were absent, Butterfield arrived near adjournment. Reports covered parks, the Crary monument damage, and a water mains extension on North Ninth Street.
Martha Ellen Trump aged 57 of Elkhart died at home yesterday after a year long paralysis. She leaves husband W. H. Trump a son Ibert A. Trump of Chicago and daughters Mrs B A Deffler and Miss Cora Lee Trump of Elkhart. Her 86 year old mother Mrs Rebecca Williams resides nearby with sister Mrs Fletcher West seven miles east of Elkhart and two of her sisters Mrs J C Cloyes and H W Moore of Elkhart also survive. She was a Daughter of Rebekah.
Goshen residents will hear Handel's Messiah as the Elkhart Oratorio Society performs at Bucklen opera house Friday evening. The chorus exceeds 100 voices with city’s leading soloists. Proceeds fund a Y M C A building project estimated at 15 000 to 20 000 dollars, with Lake Shore promising half the amount.
Indiana's St Joseph County plans a costly monument for dead soldiers. The project budget tops $25, drawing praise for its design and significance given the county's Civil War service.
An owner has been found for the horse picked up on the Goshen farm of Israel Cripe. Lippman’s horse was reported stolen in South Bend on April 19. Proclaimed contenders include Adam Heimberger for secretary of state and Albert Schoonover for secretary, with Jerome Herff seeking treasurer. Other potential bids target auditor and attorney general, reflecting an active field and party optimism.
A Goshen High School theatre party travels to Elkhart to see Walker Whiteside in The Merchant of Venice at Bucklen Opera House. Chaperoned by Miss Emma Butler, the group includes Harry and Marion Leaming, Ralph Gottschall, Louis Hawks, and many others. Samuel Baringer died after a long illness at his Manchester home on April 20 1902. Funeral services were held at his house and he was buried in Keystone cemetery. He was born February 5 1846 in Elkhart Indiana and served 100 days in the Civil War. Survived by wife Matilda Ruple and seven children with ten grandchildren. The community mourns his loss.

The Indiana Railway Co. ran a special car for about 70 Goshen theater-goers to South Bend to see Maude Adams in Quality Street at the Auditorium. The party included F. G. Hubbell, Helen Hubbell, Frank J. Irwin, Kate Jackson, and many others, who reported the performance as delightful.
The Sun reports Herman Boyce recently deposited a large hoard of pennies in Kendallville. Jim Riley, a Goshen German grocer, collected pennies for years, packing them in boxes until a dray took the 19 700 total to the bank. The cashier faced a long count and weary fingers.
Eleven trunks with costumes for Andrew Robson's Richard Carvel production were dumped into Sandusky’s lake after a wagon wheel hit a rut. The loss is about $2,000. Robson recently appeared at the Irwin theater.
