French and German forces clash in Staugele southeast with heavy artillery action. Night attacks by Teutons cause infantry deaths as fighting continues across the sector.
On the Austro Italian front Gen. Cadorna drives pressure toward Trent with Alpine troops capturing a height. In the Laon area the German French battle continues with intense artillery action and scarce infantry. On the British front raiding operations are reported.
Washington June 22 naval officers said reports that a British steamer arrived at an Atlantic port with prisoners from a German raider were baseless. Communication with the port showed a British steamer did dock there but brought no German prisoners.
On the northern Russian front south of Smorgon German planes dropped leaflets to soldiers thanking them for joining in rest periods that allowed troop transfers to the western front. The leaflets warn that enough troops have moved and state they will fight and fire on fraternizers.
Vienna dispatch reports Count Clam-Martinie, former Austrian premier, failed to secure recognition of the ministry after resigning. He asked Emperor Charles to invite another person to form a cabinet as Austria faces serious political conditions.
The directors of the Dodge Manufacturing Company of Mishawaka Indiana have declared a regular quarterly dividend of 1 percent on common stock payable July 2.
Under quarantine for diphtheria at the James Edsall residence a 16 year old son Dale has the disease.
The road bed of the Michigan division of the Big Four is being gravelled.
President Denman asks the Federal Trade Commission to set uniform prices for steel and steel products nationwide. The commission would name a fair price that yields a fair profit on steel, pig iron, and all materials used in steel manufacture.
Finnish newspapers report that Japan offered to support the Russian government in organizing democracy and in reorganizing the Russian army. They say Japan wishes Russia to resume its place among the combatants soon.
Albert Clark, 29, condemned for the murder of Marshal Harvey Hake of Covington Ohio, was electrocuted early today at the Ohio state penitentiary. The killer’s body was sent to Ironton for burial. Clark had shot Hake when arrested for non support on January 12 1917.
Grace Lusk a high school teacher who after firing a pistol reportedly tried to end her life will recover doctors said. The case involves Bors Roberts wife of Dr J David Roberts former state veterinary surgeon and occurred in Waukesh a Wisconsin town with reports of a self inflicted gunshot.
Captain Foster of Baltimore says his Garland line steamer believes it sunk a German submarine two days after leaving Liverpool bound for an Atlantic port. He reported the incident June 22.
Associated Press report from Washington notes ten day mustering of National Guard engineering units from Indiana Michigan Ohio Illinois and 11 other states into federal service to construct national army cantonments.
Washington reports at noon today total Red Cross subscriptions amount to 62,284,982 toward the 100,000,000 goal. New York City has pledged 26,862,862 as part of the campaign.

Elkhart county pledges 20000 and Elkhart city has 10700, surpassing its share by 700. Goshen subscriptions exceed 1500. Goshen owes 5000. Individual donors include William H Charney Haines Egbert and Mayor Spohn each giving 250.
Mrs Beldan Lewis of Richmond Indiana a leader in the Indiana Woman s Franchise league will address Goshen Woman s Franchise league members next Tuesday. Arrangements set for meetings in Waterford and in each ward with a Tuesday library program as a public session. She is regarded as an unusually good speaker and comes from the Indiana Woman s Franchise league speakers bureau.

A Big Four speedster struck a bicyclist at the North Fifth street crossing this morning. The rider was hurled to the ground and the bicycle demolished. The speeder escaped with little damage and was derailed.

War registration returns nearly complete show 9,649,930 men aged 21 to 30 enrolled for national service based on reports from Wyoming and Kentucky.
Rogers band opens the season at the park with a concert and 5 cent dance. The ensemble includes Rogers musicians plus 10 players from Elkhart. A five cent admission applies to those without coupon tickets. Coupon tickets grant access to all Friday night concerts. Patrons should use Pike street and Lincolnt avenue entrances.
The Excelsior motorcycle purchased by Goshen city via Lawrence Bigler arrived today. Candidates for motorcycle cop include Alva Kindle, Mayer Spohn, and Marshal Christman, with the appointing power to decide. A general campaign against speeders will be launched soon after. Complaints have been filed against autoists and motorcyclists.
The ladies and society of the First Reformed church have elected officers for the term. President is Mrs. Frank Crowell. First Vice President is Mrs. Chas. Parker. Second Vice President is Mrs. Amy Blough. Secretary is Mrs. D. A. Hartman. Treasurer is Mrs. M. E. Harter.
William Birtwhistle aged 59 died in Sterling Colorado while seeking health treatment. His wife joined him on the trip and the body was sent back to Nappanee for burial. Daughter Joy Trader accompanied the remains. Mrs Birtwhistle stayed behind due to illness.
Clifford Wooster aged 23, formerly of Brushy Prairie and Topeka, died in an auto accident near Pontine Michigan when the car he rode in went over an embankment. His parents reside near Wolcottville.
Yoder and Swartz of Nappanee secured a $17,000 dredging contract at Rochester. The agreement covers mud removal and channel deepening to aid river navigation.
John Mohler Studebaker of South Bend dies at about 80 leaving an estate appraised at 3.39 million dollars. He held 24,789 shares of Studebaker Corp common stock and 7,300 preferred shares, plus railroad holdings and mining stock with many noted values and losses.
Loren Henry a 19 year old Goshen resident left town with another man’s wife who has stayed in Goshen five weeks. Henry’s father disclaims responsibility for any debts his son incurred while living with the woman. Henry worked in local factories and reportedly spent his earnings on the Gary woman who captivated him.
The Tri Kappas host an auction party at the Red Cross headquarters corner Lincoln Ave and Fifth St from 2 p m with 25 cent admission. Proceeds fund convalescent care materials including capes bed socks tray cloths and comfort kits for Red Cross box No S. Miss Goldie Greenawalt plans a 6 o’clock dinner tonight at her South Third street home with several boy friends.
Catherine A. Buntin, 59, wife of Charles A. Buntin, died at home in Elkhart from injuries suffered a year earlier in a fall at the Buntin summer home on Klinger Lake. Surviving are her husband, a daughter, a sister, a brother, and a niece.
A man calling himself Mr Stevens claimed to represent a large machine company and tried to obtain a 100 loan after placing a 5000 order at Foster's Machine Works in Elkhart. He departed Elkhart before investigators learned he was a fraud in Omaha Nebraska where he is wanted.
The Eden township church in Lagrange County was rededicated with Rev Baker of Pennsylvania delivering a sermon and Rev Sifford of Millersburg giving the invocation. Attendees came from Goshen Millersburg Middlebury and Stroh and about 186 dollars was raised for a new roof.
The Mitford Mail notes a recent funeral featured music from a Victrola with selections including Rock of Ages and The Beautiful Isle of Somewhere. Victrolas have become common at funerals, especially in smaller cities and towns.
Carl M. Fulmer of Mishawaka was arrested in Elkhart for violating the traffic ordinance. George W. Flemins, former county clerk, filed the complaint.
The Red Cross war fund drive in Elkhart ended today with subscriptions totaling 10,700 dollars. An apportionment of 10,000 dollars was set.

All Indiana guard volunteers will soon be called into federal service with August 5 set as the effective date. The move places Indiana units under federal authority for national duty.
Indianapolis June 22. Most Indiana national guard units will enter federal service soon. The ambulance and field hospital corps at Fort Harrison will be mustered in at once, with Company B of the engineers also called up. On August 5 the First and Third infantry regiments and remaining units will be called. a new Fourth regiment is hoped to be recruited in time.

Robert Braungen 66 formerly Disko killed in Madison Wisconsin auto crash. John Kimmel 70 longtime Kendallville resident dies at National Military Home Marion. Mrs Vinnie Justice 48 formerly Lapaz dies in Terre Haute sister of James Rector Najpanee. Elmer S Jeffries 28 dies in South Bend born Auburn body interred Churubusco. Mrs George V W Solomon dies at Battle Creek sanitarium. Rochester ties noted.
At Fort Wayne the jury found John H. Sammy Woehler guilty of assaulting 12 year old Imogene Meyers after 14 hours of deliberation. He received a prison term of two to 21 years in Michigan City and a $1000 fine. Relatives of Woehler reportedly lobbied to avoid prison as two jurors favored acquittal.
17 year old Faye Stomm was sitting in a car at Corunna when an unknown person cut off her hair. Her father was in the Elsie Oster residence rehearsing with the Corunna orchestra at the time of the incident.
A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs Charles Randolph of north of Goshen. A son or daughter named Vanente was born to Mr and Mrs Russell Shoup of Middlebury.
John Braden aged 71 died in Relen New Mexico where he had lived five years He held heavy investments in oil properties.
Milford plans a new postoffice building funded by the Milford Loan and Investment Co. Also noted are Best grades white shoe cleaners No ble Miller and a popular five cent dance tonight at Rogers' band park.
