American forces fighting alongside France slowed the German rush along considerable stretches of the front from the Oise to the Marne. They reportedly stopped and pushed back German units, with heavy casualties and prisoners taken, as fighting persisted with back and forth gains on multiple sectors.
Paris dispatch reports American and French forces stopped a German advance near Neuilly Wood in Champagne and repelled a dashing counterattack. German gains on the Marne were driven back by Allied troops, while between the Oise and the Aisne progress was halted. farther south French losses were modest.
Washington reports a recent Allied air raid on Cologne killed 146 people and injured about 180. Citizens were driven into a state of what officials call the most absolute panic.
Reports from New York on June 4 indicate an American tanker damaged in a clash with a German submarine off the American coast reached an Atlantic port. Naval tugs towed the crippled vessel in. officials withheld further details.

A bolt struck the B. D. Miller store in Millersburg causing a fire with slight damage. Fire crews responded and contained the blaze to the building. No injuries reported.
At an Atlantic port on June 4, three hundred survivors from the torpedoed liner Carolina were rescued in open boats by the schooner Etta D. Doug lass. Seven crew members were landed by coast guard craft and taken to a station for clothing and food. No deaths are believed to have occurred amid reports the German submarines operated offshore yesterday.
Under a nationwide express company consolidation the American Railroad Express company will be formed with capital of 30,000,000 dollars and an office at West Lincoln Avenue Goshen. Clayton Bartholomew of the American Express Co. will run the Goshen agency while Wells Fargo Express is discontinued. workers will obtain employment with the new company at various locations.

County Agricultural Agent Grover M Metzger reports many Elk Hart County taraspre areas need harvest labor for the 1918 wheat crop and general farm work. He is registering laborers as 15 farmers request help, but current supply is insufficient. Factory and store workers are urged to remain in the country at least through the harvest.
The second registration under the army draft law will be held tomorrow. All males who have turned 21 since June 1617 are required to register for military service. Residents of Elkhart county in draft division No. 1 will register in Goshen.
Frank E. Osborne of Laporte received a judgment for 13 thousand dollars against the estate of John M. Ridgeway of Laporte county. The award covered legal services though Osborne sought 25 thousand dollars.
James H. Matthews of 623 South Eighth Street was appointed deputy fish and game warden for the district by Sullivan and Lundquist of the state game and fish department. He succeeds Chief of Police John K. Abney and will assume his duties at once. Matthews is a longtime resident and a prominent Democrat.
Indianapolis June 4 Special under the President's call for men to the colors during the five day period beginning June 21 Bikbart county will send twenty seven men from division one and thirty five men from division two. Gary bank clearings for May were $485670.47 a gain of $40000 over April.
William H. Nymeyer, Republican, elected to the city board of education to replace Sol Dembufsky. The board approved pay raises for city officials including Marshal Rigney to $100 monthly and Patrolmen Jackson and Cobburn to $85. A parks committee review was ordered for a Rogers Band Park Association request to fund park care at about $15 weekly during June to August. The council also notes Nymeyer’s three-year term starts August, with holdover members Brooks and Wysong.
The annual session of the Bikbart county board of review began yesterday at the courthouse and will run for 30 days. Members include Auditor Bemenderfer, Treasurer Winship, Assessor Bartholomew, J. B. Davidson of Elkhart Republican, and Sam Lewis of Goshen Democrat.
