A severe storm struck Warsaw and nearby areas about 3 PM, bringing rain hail wind and lightning for over two hours. Flooding reached two feet in streets flooding cellars damaging $10 000 in retail stock and forcing evacuation in the Hays Memorial building and Minnewawan Inn. The Big Four rail line between Claypool and Warsaw was washed out delaying trains.
Miss Julia B Schadt aged 27 died in Anderson hospital from a complication of diseases after months of deteriorating health following a fall on ice. She was daughter of John F Schadt, formerly of Goshen, now of Tippecanoe Lake. Survived by her father four brothers Edward Harry Charles Will and two sisters Edith Mabel. Remains to be moved to Miss Sophia Berth’s home in Goshen and funeral arrangements incomplete.
The Jacob Daviahizer farm near Wakarusa faces a delay in gas drilling as essential machinery has not arrived. The Wakarusa Tribune shows a derrick crowd and notes the band’s music as the project pauses awaiting progress and gas discovery.
T Holdeman of Elkhart delivered a fine specimen of pure copper ore found five miles southwest of Elkhart to State Geologist Blatchley. Blatchley suggested the ore likely originated in the Lake Superior region from ancient ice floes, noting similar finds in northern Indiana.
Chas. A. Wehmeyer representing Geo. W. Wehmeyer inspects city records today to locate municipal debt as the contractor candidate for a future school house project. The contract has not yet been let and council’s sidewalks and bridges committee meets tonight. Obrecht walk on Eighth Street may be ordered with Burns and Stonex to build. Purl property walk on Sixth Street could also be ordered.
The Presbyterian church young ladies host a reception this evening at Mrs. John H. Gortner's home 208 South Sixth street with Miss Katharine Fink and Mr. E J Finney kindly agreeing to sing. The event aims to support church activities.
Fred Westfall 38 of Elkhart remains jailed for deserting his wife and marrying another woman in Garrett and cannot post bond. His hearing is set for Monday. his second wife is missing. Also note discharges and minor notices: Mrs Maria Culp released from Longancelif f asylum, Adam Fulmer’s suicide means a will not be probated before Monday, Vern Coulter freed without bail on theft charges at Eighth and Jefferson.
Professor Calvin Ewing, former Goshen resident who ran a business college, wed Miss Tilly Erdman in La Porte on Wednesday after settling a $5,000 breach of promise suit with $200 cash paid to Miss Mattis of Chicago. They head to Chicago for a wedding trip amid La Porte editorials critiquing his conduct. General Edwin R. Niles once warned of eventual consequences for the professor’s escapades.
John Fretz returns to Waterloo after visiting his son Lewis B. Fretz who vanished from Fort Wayne under mysterious circumstances. Fretz finds Lewis in Bedford Indiana in poor health and broken down rather than returning to Fort Wayne or Waterloo. He will likely relocate soon and keep his residence secret from former friends.
Yorktown Indiana sees renewed debate on interurban interlocking switches after a wreck with one death involving a Union Traction car and Big Four trains. Indiana laws from 1883 1897 and 1901 addressed interlocking costs and approvals but did not resolve crossings between steam and electric lines.
A social gathering honored Mrs George B Slate on her birthday with about 20 guests. Plans to picnic at the dam were changed due to threatening weather and the party moved to Emerson street home where refreshments came from prepacked baskets. Mrs Slate received many gifts including a ping pong set.
The LaPorte Herald recalls the T. A. Quinlan automobile crash, noting it occurred in LaPorte nearly a month ago with physicians unsure if Quinlan would lose sight in either eye. He returned to Chicago soon after the accident. Sears Gardner plans to buy two carloads of four and five year old horses in Northwestern Illinois for auction to farmers, with ads to appear in THE DeEmocRAT. Rev Kuhn reports July had 13 rainy days and 9 inches of rain, with last year’s July at five rainy days and 24 inches.
John B. Gilson of Niles sues Pat Gaudaur in South Bend to recover a team of gray horses Gaudaur said Johnson stole. Johnson and Gaudaur reached a compromise in Goshen with no prosecutions. Gilson asserts the horses belonged to him and were hired out for an electric railway grading job. a disapp earing act followed after one day.
The Democrat reports Fanny Rice will sing in a Grand Rapids park with free admission. The South Bend Times notes the admission is about the right figure and the Elkhart Review suggests offering a premium. The papers disparage Fanny.
Miss Kate Bredemus arrives from North Manchester to aid gospel meetings at the Mennonite church on North Ninth street. Presiding Elder A B Yoder of Wakarusa will attend and plans a quarterly meeting next Sunday.
Among those who went to Niagara Falls last evening are Ira Teagarden, the Misses Mary and Glen Huffman, Albert Swinehart, Frank Jacobs of Ligonier and Mr. and Mrs. John Winter. In all 22 tickets were sold from this station with many extending trips from Niagara. Fainted In Chicago Store, Mrs. Theodore Griner of North Eighth street visiting Chicago, was overcome by heat but revived in hospital and is visiting Charles Straub’s family. Tippecanoe harvest celebration August 22 includes balloon ascent, races, and Notre Dame Professor Hering to speak. J M Ober at first Big Four agent role opts to stay in Goshen. The Jewish World lists 112 American Jewish millionaires, Chicago 15, New York 38, Philadelphia 5, Cincinnati 9, St. Louis 2, Brooklyn 1, San Francisco 10, Boston 1.
The Modern Woodmen of America welcomed Frank Peffley Curt Nelson and Sam Lewis at the latest lodge gathering. Sam Lewis received the "work" a ceremonial assignment.
Mr and Mrs H L Arnold host an informal dancing party this evening in McNaughton hall. A large crowd is anticipated. Money to loan. Lant and Brown.
A man from Elkhart left his wife and seven children with only 12 cents to buy provisions and moved to Detroit with a disreputable woman. Police are tracking him. Walter Brown and Congressman Brick voyage to Rochester to address Brick defections in Fulton county. Meanwhile Elkhart police raided the Commercial, arresting Weatherwax and eight gamblers who pled guilty and paid the assessments. Indiana Railway officials will accept the city ordinance on freight hauling.
The case involving John W. Free and his sister Miss Susan Free seeks to divide a 107 acre Free farm in Tymochtee township. Heirs span Kansas to Pennsylvania with shares from 37.84 acres to fractions of an acre. The suit progresses after decades of complex inheritance and the sale will include the old house once linked to the so called Immortal J. N. pastor.
Fred Elbe, from a well known German family, pleaded guilty to assaulting Mrs. Janowiski, age sixty, who was walking home when accosted in Polish and driven to a remote spot where she was attacked. Indignation follows the case.

The Congregational church at Fremont was damaged by lightning a few days ago. The large stave factory of J H Gregg at Bremen was totally destroyed by fire a few nights ago. The one hundred and sixtieth regiment reunion at Wabash postponed to September 15 16.
Mrs Ed Prownett left Wawasee after her mother fell ill. Pickwick youths built a tennis court and plan warm matches. Frank Coppes and wife hosted their annual Pickwick cottage picnic at Wawasee with Mayor Deahl attending.
James R. McConnell and George Garrett, the young New York automobileists, arrived in Chicago after covering the New York to Chicago route in 11 days and 13 hours. They faced fiber gear breakdowns and 21 days waiting for repairs but completed the journey despite skeptics. A Record-Herald cut features McConnell and notes the trip as a strong record. A funnel cloud sighting near Wakarusa triggered superstitions among residents but is hoped to signal oil or gas discoveries rather than disaster.
The young people of the German Baptist church at Clinton and Fifth streets will present a program of exercises at 7 30 Sunday evening to support general mission work. The public is invited to attend.
The Mennonite Brethren in Christ plan an annual camp meeting at Dunilap's Park between Goshen and Elkhart on the electric line from August 7 to 17. An Elk lodge was organized at War saw last night. About 25 members of Go hen lodge no 798 BP OE had aranged to go but the trip was abandoned.
