The Beach to Burkey and Carlyle star route mail service will operate three times weekly starting July 1. E. D. Madison won the four year contract for 1200 dollars annually and will also carry passengers making it a combined stage and mail route.
Chrysler of the Electric Light Co and the city council reach an agreement on street lighting for Beach byenight, with five arc lamps of 1200 candle power in the business district and seventeen incandescent lamps of 50 candle power placed where most needed. Progress reported on wiring and power house equipment, with contract work soon to begin.
Geo Sweet a well known farmer four miles southwest of Carlyle died Saturday night of heart failure aged 65 years six months. He had long struggled with heart trouble and bid neighbors farewell that afternoon. Survived by widow, two sons and two daughters. Funeral conducted by United Brethren at his home.
About thirty Dickinson residents traveled to town last Sunday to face the Beach team. With Armentrout on the mound and Army showing skill, Beach led 3 to 2 until the eighth inning. The local umpire reportedly declared Beach could not win and favored Dickinson, prompting Beach to withdraw. The score rose to 6 to 1 as the Beach team left the field, with errors by Beach cited as a factor. Dickinson supporters criticized the umpiring. the Elks and Dickinson players disputed the call, insisting on playing fair next time.
Thomas Whitman, formerly of Karlville, sustained severe injuries at Alfers and Merrill barn when a vicious team of bronchos kicked him. He lost an eye, suffered facial injuries, and was later transported to Dickinson for emergency surgery to remove the eye.
Two weeks from next Monday Beach plans the first real Independence Day celebration in Beach with substantial merchant support. The event features the Thompson company from Minneapolis, high wire acts, balloon ascents, ball games, and a grand parade. A patriotic address, possible Jeffries Johnson fight report, free concerts by the Golden Valley Military Band, grand fireworks, and a late night dance are advertised. Free water, hay for horses, a corral, and rest tents are arranged for attendees and visiting tents are invited the night before.
Burk's Lig company touts its Mammoth Uncle Tom's Cabin production as the largest dramatic touring show in America. The organization fields a vast cast and crew with many animals and chariots, plus a vaudeville contingent and Fred Pilcher's concert band. It will perform in Beach on June 20 in a 2500-seat waterproof palace pavilion theater.
Jointly by the Christian Sunday Schools of Williams Creek and Carlyle Sunday services were held at Williams Creek school house. A fine program of music and recitations preceded a dinner for about 150 people. F D Morford spoke, Fatty Moore hoarded two dishpanfuls, a photo was taken, and a collection of 8.35 was sent to the home department.
A large dance is planned at the Beach opera house next Friday June 24 with Attle Tweed Orchestra providing the music for the event.
The department awaits at least 75 families to pledge mailboxes for rural route 3. Starting at Reach post office the 294 mile route runs south and west across sections 35 34 3 and toward the Dakota Montana line then along the state line back to the post office.
The Third Annual State Good Roads Convention will meet at Fargo June 22 and 23, with the Grain Growers Department of Society of Equity continuing the meeting on the 24th. The program features top speakers to discuss terminal elevator matters, better Durum wheat prices, and handling the 1910 crop, aiming to interest every farmer in the state.
On Wednesday the 15th J. B. Page married Miss Pearl Doubles near Burkey with Rev Orchard of the Congregational church officiating. Attendants were Miss N. McCornack and best man M. A. Scherffins. witnesses included Mrs. R. I. Nichols and Miss Russell of this city. The bride’s father Joseph Doubles is a prominent Burkey farmer. the groom shares local agricultural ties. Congratulations from The Chronicle. The A. B. Clark Horse Sales Co. will hold a sale June 20 21 22 and 23 in Miles City MT offering about 4000 horses of all classes.
