Washington June 7 The Postmaster General Burleson outlines measures in the postal system noting about 1,000 additional clerks and 1,500 new city carriers attached during the first 90 days of the administration. He also directs discontinuing back stamping of all mail to speed delivery, with earlier stamps marking delivery times.
Beach ball team traveled to Sidney last Sunday and beat Sidney 18 to 14 despite thick dust and a high wind that slowed play. Fuller led Beach with two three run homers and strong hitting from the team, while Pire and Fuller starred for Beach. Adams and Williston were Sidney’s battery. The win followed by a note that Stone’s athletics will travel to Alpha next for a scheduled game.
A four and a half year old boy, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. D. Botch, was instantly killed when a runaway plow team struck him near their yard four miles west of town. The boy’s body was found mangled after being dragged over 400 feet. The incident occurred as the father returned home for supper with two four horse teams hitched to gang plows. The funeral is set for St. Philip's Church, while the family grieves with the mother recently confined to bed after childbirth.
Fargo North Dakota June 10 Good roads boosters attend a two day session of the North Dakota Highway Improvement Association. Practical demonstrations show best dirt road forms due to scarce local materials. Latest machinery is displayed and experts lead talks. This afternoon Gay Hanna spoke on funding methods for road construction.
The Golden Valley Farmers Co-Operative Elevator held its stockholders meeting at Beach meeting house with 125 of 200 stockholders present. Fred A Powers presided as 10 percent dividend to stockholders and grain dividends were approved. Directors elected included Powers Suill Halstead Noble Hill Odland and Occh. The company remains the largest farmers cooperative in the state.
Washburn North Dakota June 11 court opened with the criminal calendar case of W T Anderson charged with the murder of F E Funk former cashier of the Batpation bank of ia A is described as a mystery by officials familiar with the case while the proceedings began and the court convened today.
Judge Craw ford is expected to preside as a change of venue is unlikely to move the trial to another county. Anderson remains silent under strain of confinement while Sheriff Simon blocks interviews without State's Attorney Moveries approval. Frank C. Hughes, Glendive Heat & Power manager, visits Fargo with Mrs. Hughes and discusses Bull Moose sentiment and Progressive party activity in Montana.
The Northern Pacific Railway Company filed an official plat with the North Dakota Railroad Commissioners naming four new towns on the north branch from Stanton in Mercer county. Hazen Beulah Zap and Olanta lie along Secs and ranges in Township 144. The line near Bowdish and Golden Valley promises rapid growth as grading proceeds with about thirty crews at work on the new road bed this spring and summer.
John Wilkins and his son Dick were badly hurt Monday when a premature gunpowder blast blew rock apart. Dick, packing powder with an iron bar, struck the rock edge, sending sparks into powder and triggering the explosion. Both men suffered injuries including facial burns, cuts, and a leg bruise, with the son's eyes and face in serious condition.
At the insistence of Congressman George Young of the second district, Postmaster General Burleson established a new fourth class post office at Chama in Golden Valley county and appointed Minnie B. Whipple as the first postmaster.
Washington June 10 The Supreme Court upheld the constitutionality of the newspaper publicity law from the 1912 appropriation act. Chief Justice White said the regulation imposes extra conditions for second class mail privileges. It bars newspapers from mail if editors or owners fail to provide sworn semi annual statements listing partners and average daily circulation and requires marked paid articles to be labeled advertisements.
