The Farmers Elevator Company stockholders held an annual meeting at the Piesik hall last Tuesday. An adjournment was taken to Friday August 6 to finalize yearly reports and elections. Secretary Noble reported solid grain profits and a projected near 3000. The group discussed increasing capital to 25000 and adding warehouse space.
The writers recount their Seattle trip, praising Belfield friends who aided their journey and noting a cloudy day. They describe forests and canyons marred by charred stumps from fires, and report Seattle’s population exceeding 300,000 with abundant hotels and restaurants. They mention Independence Day celebrations in larger towns and high living costs, as they spent four days at the fair and the rest elsewhere.
On Thursday July 22 a major horse sale will be held at the Nichols and Britt ranch one mile south of Square Butte.100 head from their 600 horses will be auctioned to the highest bidder. Percheron and Shire bred stock with mares weighing 1500 to 1600 and paying attention to both broke and unbroke horses. Auctioneer Clyde Moore will conduct the sale with bankable paper terms starting November 1.
Harve Robinson, longtime Sentinel Butte Bank president, sold his interest to local parties. He remains in the country and may devote time to stock raising. A new president was not yet chosen. Martin, former Beach Farmers & Merchants Bank president and major stockholder, is a likely selection.
In Sentinel Butte a wreck caused a fatality as J H Hayes died at Dickinson hospital from injuries suffered when a barrel of ice and water fell on him. Hayes, about 34 and single, had a long history of injuries including a 60 foot fall on a crow bar years earlier. Services were announced for Rocky Butte church Sundays at three with Sabbath school at two.
Regular Carlyle correspondent reports continued rain and local comings and goings. Luther Orton of Princeton Minnesota visits relatives. Knudtson family connections linked to Arthur Knudtson’s Miller South Dakota department store. Rob Rainey of Black River Falls stops to visit. Exposition trip to Seattle planned and Carlyle gains a barber shop run by Fred Brown with talk of another store and jeweler shop.
Perry Noland will have the building for J Newt Evans ready in fifteen days. Sam Carlson, hotel man, is arranging furniture. Mrs Sam Carlson traveled to Beach for bedding and provisions. J M Kanouse expands groceries and merchandise. Mat J Anderson of Glendive seeks a business location. Anton Paulson feeds 25 to 30 men daily at his restaurant, working alone. Hubert Maus and a Burkey visitor toured Yates. Ben Nichols and Josh Pumlow from Kenmare plan a stay. Miss Linch of Kenmare visits J M Johnson. J S Snyder of Sentinel Butte visited with his auto.
Sam Lowery, once a Billings County commissioner, died after being brought from Belfield to Beach pest house where he had been critically ill. He left no friends or money. His body was buried in Beach Cemetery. Subscribe for the Golden Valley Chronicle to follow news.
A half insane man being transported from Missoula to Michigan leapt from a moving train west of town about 11 p m. with feet and hands tied. Staff on board backed the train and searched, the man was found next morning in a Beach lodging house still bound, and with straps severed. He rested then continued his journey with his guardian thanking local help.
Robert Burns Jr. 13, son of Roadmaster Burns, suffered severe crushing injuries after being struck by a moving train while riding the side of a box car near Scranton. He was amputated near the elbow and had a skull wound stitched, but expected to recover. Also listed is sale notice for a well improved land tract in township 138 range 105 offered by Geo. McCellan.
