Petrol Tax Figures Expose Federal Grab on Road Funds
The Commonwealth 12 months to June 30 1848 took 14 000 515 in petrol tax with 4 738 008 for States road work and 11 271 417 diverted to consolidated revenue. NSW motorists paid 5 048 043 with 1 536 144 for road grants. NSW total petrol tax largely diverted. NFMA general secretary B E Richards urged more Commonwealth road aid and tax relief, accusing the tax of diverting funds from roads to other uses. He also cited Sydney Harbour tolls of 357 514 as an unjust burden and urged petrol tax proceeds be used for national road and bridge projects.
