A survivor treasurer recounts the Gloucester Cottage Hospital fundraising effort begun in 1910 amid railway work and mass accidents. Residents pledged £1500, £1000 paid, while a £12,000 hospital plan faced funds, politics, and medical opposition. World War I shifted focus but the hospital board now inherits funds and memories of generous donors.
The Mount George School of Arts hosts its annual Spring Rodeo with the Australian Rough Riders’ Association. Noted riders Bass Gollan and Dan Edwards plan exhibitions, Calico the horse to ride, and stock drafting events slated. Buses from Gloucester Number One and Wingham will transport spectators. new yards and upgraded ground facilities promise the biggest rodeo yet.
The Prime Minister Mr Chifley told Parliament on Wednesday his orders regarding the source confidential documents cited by Country Party Leader Mr Fadden last week. Outside, Mr Fadden called Chifley actions outrageous and a threat to Parliamentary privilege.
Asal Woolford wins two events in a busy weekend at the local golf links. He retains the Club Championship Foursomes with Ross Street and leads the field in Saturday Stableford with top scores from H. Woolford 25 I. Muddle 1 FE A Harris 27 and B Frost 25. Sunday sees Garner and T. Ceriton paired with W. Garner and G Garner in the championship foursomes, while Wilson and Deards win the Handicap Foursome with net 70.
The first round on Saturday saw Highfield Laurantus and Kendalls teams qualifying for tomorrow's round. Houghton's four with a bye will enter, as Lowe Andrews Boorer Highfield 2 on 20 defeated McIntosh Campbell. Laurents and others posted 30 to 23 and 31 to 20 in several matches, while a social game saw Thompson Dombkins Adams defeat Chaplin McCoy Houghton. The Singles final between Highield and Laurence promises a thriller after tight early heads and a late surge 32 21.
The NLRLMLA cautions buyers on used cars after price controls lift. Ex taxis may look sound but be worn and costly to repair. Doctoring engines to pass inspection is common, and a thorough expert examination is advised before purchase. Also notes Methodist services on Sunday.
At Tuesday night’s Gloucester Chamber of Commerce meeting the poor rail services were debated. A Rail Way Dept letter blamed a crew shortage for service curtailment while Kempsey day and night trains were extended to four trips weekly and would return to normal as circumstances permit. The Secretary was asked to press the Chief Traffic Manager to restore Gloucester passengers’ ability to join the 2nd Division for Sydney on Monday mornings and to pursue a Sunday night Kempsey to Sydney train with Newcastle Chambers. The Gloucester Shire Council agreed to cooperate on an Air Safety Committee and to seek Civil Aviation Department help for an emergency landing ground near Gloucester. Safety work at the dead-end of Church Street and Ravenshaw Street drainage inspections were noted. President N. Vidal presided, with W. Highfield, S. Relf, A. Hazelwood, P. De Queene and Secretary J. Carolan in attendance.
Winchcombs Carson Ltd notes irregular competition on Tuesday in Sydney pig sales with total supplies down to 1400. Prime heavy bacon stock sold at £16 per head, medium weight £10, others £6 and up, prime bacon at £12, lighter at £9 10, prime heavy workers £6, lighter £5.
