Sacred Heart Fort Dodge opens and grows under Heelan era
In 1897 Archbishop Hen nessy appointed Father Edmond Heelan as pastor of a new Sacred Heart parish in Fort Dodge. The first Mass occurred October 24 1897 in a newly constructed church. A rectory convent and school followed as the parish expanded. The school opened 1902 with 78 pupils and a higher school wing arrived in 1903. The church was dedicated November 7 1922 after continued building and fundraising. The parish later split to form Holy Rosary in 1946 and a central high school named St Edmond opened 1955. A 1963 elementary school was built as the parish modernized.
