Good Shepherd Sisters arrive to found home in Sioux City
In 1903 Bishop Garrigan advanced a Good Shepherd foundation in Sioux City. Sisters Mary Ignatius and Mary Martha arrived in February to seek support, staying first with the Sisters of Mercy and later at a cottage opposite the hospital. They collected funds, moved to a larger site on 24th Street, and opened a home later serving as a school for girls age 12 to 18. The institution, staffed by Sisters of the Good Shepherd and local clergy, operated until 1963, followed by Villa Maria in 1965 built by the diocese for troubled adolescent girls.
