Vocational Agriculture teacher W B Cowan proposes naming and erecting Glen Rose street markers by his Ag boys. He says it would boost teaching, foster community pride, and let students serve, while costing less.
The report lists score predictions such as Granbury 28 over Goldthwaite 14 and Texas 7 over SMU 21 with Georgia Tech at 14 and Texas Tech 28 over Okla A&M 7. Maryland 21 and Baylor 20 with Rice 7 and LSU 6 also appear.
Mrs R A French of Meridian has won a pushbutton range in Hotpoint s 2 Million Dollar Golden Anniversary national contest announced by Community Public Service Meridian. Judges in Chicago selected her prize entry as best from the immediate area amid a sweep of awards including four fully furnished electric homes and 50 pushbutton kitchen laundries. The Hotpoint event marks 50 years of progress in electric living and highlights Hotpoint s history from the electric iron to the range and dishwasher.
The Southside Fort Worth Assemblies of God meets in Glen Rose at the tabernacle in Rivercrest Park for an all day rally on Monday October 3. Morning services start at 10 a m and afternoon services at 2 30 p m A basket lunch is served at noon Youth Rally begins at 7 30 p m Rev Harry Engle presides with outstanding speakers music and singing Rev Pace invites the public to attend.
Torrential rains in Somervell County last Friday caused topsoil losses on farms. Terrace systems by J. O. Pruitt and Sam White prevented erosion. the Brown brothers diverted twenty acres of runoff to a stock tank. Emphasis on using legumes like vetch and sweet clover to improve moisture retention and reduce crusting. The Soil Conservation Service unit in Somervell has moved to the B. B. Bone building on the square, shared with the Farmer's Home Administration.
Family and friends gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Davis to mark his 79th birthday. Attendees included couples from Cleburne, Fort Worth, Hico, Dublin, Menard, Glen Rose, Duncan, Bakersfield, and Oklahoma, with many local relatives in attendance.
The White Auto Store and C. A. Milam & Son buildings, owned by Mrs. Maggie Snyder, are being remodeled this week. A large door replaces the two front doors, rock columns are plastered, and the entire fronts will be painted. Interior decorating and plastering by Gilber Langdon, carpentry by J. B. Ivy and Sam Merrill.
Tonight at 7 30 the Rock Creek event offers good singing and refreshments. Services at Lanham Mill Schoolhouse at 7 30 on October 2 feature a talk titled Why I Like Glen Rose.
Reverend W C Childress 71 longtime Methodist minister in Texas and New Mexico died after a long illness in Denton. Funeral services were held at Cole Chapel Denton with burial at Roselawn Memorial Park. A native of Somervell County he served in Palo Pinto Ervay Street Dallas Riverside Fort Worth and Abilene. Surviving sisters include Mrs C J Covey Rose Mrs Susie Gay Olton and Mrs Dona Wilks Headrick Oklahoma.
Rain continues to fall as weekend visits unfold in Fort Worth. Effie Lee, Logan, and Terry Starnes visited friends there. Mrs. Lee Curries hosted a Tupperware party with games and refreshments. Mrs. Swank shared Holy Land trip photos at Training Union. James Howard and family visited O. L. Howard's home. Ivan Davis returns to hospital but shows improvement.
Rotan resident C G Campbell 73 died of a heart attack in his yard at 2 30 p m last Thursday. Born August 9 1882 in Hamilton County he moved to Rotan in 1915 to run a watch repair business. He was married to Josephine Booker a Rotan teacher June 14 1936. Services were held at First Baptist Rotan burial at Evant. He was a Baptist, Mason and Eastern Star, survived by his wife and a niece Mrs Ross Routh.
A birthday gathering for Mrs. Mattie Hannan last week left out names of Mr. and Mrs. Terry Smith Marsha Smith and Edith Sproles. The party decor featured stars instead of candles.
Mrs C A Bridges returned last week from a several month visit with her daughter and son in law Mr and Mrs G F Beall in Portland Oregon.
Brother Sanders and family spent Sunday in the Herchel Barclay home. Mrs Case of Dallas visited Mr and Mrs Melvin Gambrell Sunday evening. Several from our church attended the revival rally at Granbury Sunday. The revival is now in progress at the High School Gym. The Home Demonstration Club met at Mrs J E Miller’s Friday. Several visitors were in church services Sunday including Mr and Mrs Vance Wigging of Glen Rose.
Barbara Hartis daughter of Mr and Mrs Bill Hartis was chosen Miss Glen Rose in the Cleburne Fair and Rodeo beauty contest. A sophomore and four year band majorette she represents Glen Rose in the regional event.
Heavy rainfall drenched Glen Rose and Somervell County last Friday morning with 7.5 inches by 8:30 a.m. The steady downpour caused minor damage and widespread river rise, especially Rock Creek, Georges Creek, and Granbury highway area. The Paluxy flooded briefly while the Brazos rose near Granbury before subsiding.
Former wiretap operative turned evangelist Jim Vaus attracts large crowds at Granbury Gymnasium. Sponsored by Paluxy Baptist Association, he shares Christ through nightly services at 7:45 p.m. through October 9, after his 1949 conversion influenced by Billy Graham.
Mrs. Mattie Pruitt marked her 81st birthday with a dinner at River Crest Park last Sunday. Family and friends gathered including J. O. Pruitt and Bill Pruitt families from Corpus Christi Cleburne Denison. A birthday cake and abundant food framed the joyful celebration.
The Somervell County HD Council met at the Community Center for a regular session with nine members present and visitors in attendance. The meeting opened with a prayer led by Mrs. Flippin as clubs represented discussed ongoing activities and updates from participating groups.
Glen Rose Tigers reversed a 12 0 halftime deficit to defeat Joshua Owls 26 to 12 Friday night. Key plays by Gerald Ross Aubrey Neal and Wellborn sparked a late surge as Glen Rose scored 26 unanswered points after intermission. Next week’s game at Whitney follows an open date.
Seventh Day Adventists announce Sabbath School at 3 p.m. on Sunday with a recorded program. A pictures and program segment runs each Thursday night at 7 30 p.m. for members and visitors.
