Somervell County Coon Hunters Association led by Lloyd Locke announces a Labor Day event at the rodeo arena starting 11 a.m. with pit barbecue for dues paying members. The show features coon on the log, in the log, in the hole, and in the tree with first place trophies and plans for an annual affair.
On opening day Glen Rose Schools report 473 students enrolled, down from 475 last year. Superintendent J M McCroskey notes declines across most grades, with sophomores up by 23 and juniors steady. sheriff Speck Strawn reports recovery of a deer rifle and four radios from a recent furniture store robbery and expects arrests soon. Sadie Brizendine of Rising Star visited.
H A Jackson owner of Jacksons Used Car Lot on Highway 144 reported a 1959 Ford stolen from his lot during the weekend. The car was found returned to its parking place Tuesday night with no apparent damage. Sheriff C M Speck Strawn investigates and hopes to apprehend the borrowers soon.
Mike Norman has been discharged from Children’s Hospital in Dallas and is at home with his parents Mr and Mrs Jim Norman. He is recovering well from open heart surgery performed two weeks ago.
A mass meeting is called for Tuesday night at 7 30 at the Palace Theatre to outline a proposed Somervell County recreation center on the Branham tract six miles west of town. Plans include a 110 acre lake a nine hole golf course a club house picnic grounds lakeside cabins and other facilities. The project aims to boost tourism and the economy with Farm Home Administration financing and expert input from Childress & Recer engineers.
Next Monday September 7 Labor Day will be observed as a full holiday in Glen Rose with schools closed. Banks post office and government offices shut, firms may run on Sunday hours. Other holidays observed include Veterans Day Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
Livestock owners are urged to attend a 2 p.m. meeting in the Somerville County Courthouse to plan brucellosis cattle testing. County Agent Doyle Cooper says veterinarian testers will explain the program and Dr. J B Henderson of Coterhah will be present to discuss the testing setup.
Glen Rose High School Tigers open their 1964 season at 8:00 PM Friday hosting the Granbury Pirates in a non conference clash. The Tigers, underdogs, boast 12 returnees including Nickell Shackelford Pruitt Swaim Miller Evans Boyd Jackson Jones Hawkins Thompson Sinclair.
Earl Tiffin age 53 of Texarkana died August 26 and was buried in Nashville Arkansas. He was the father of Mrs. Kenneth Trimble of Chalk Mountain.
