Our congratulations to legislators who refused to move Texas to Central Standard Time as Daylight Saving Time nears. The note recalls local citizens, a Linotype update, and urges all qualified voters to cast ballots in school board, mayoral, and city council elections next week.
A shooting at a Fort Worth drive in cafe left Margaret Hankins in critical condition after being shot three times by her husband Pagl Hankins. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. Friday as part of a severed marriage dispute. An upcoming school and city election will be held Saturday and Tuesday with multiple incumbents and candidates listed.
Thelma Covey Young, 58, died at Brackenridge Hospital Austin after a long illness. She was born in Oden, lived in Glen Rose and Stephen ville, moved to Austin three years ago. Survivors include her husband Rayford, daughter Mrs Paul Halamicek Jr of Del Rio, three sisters, two brothers, and two grandchildren. Funeral was in Stephen ville Saturday at 3 p.m. with burial in Garden of Memory Cemetery.
Wildlife biologist Joe Stevens reported 24 antlerless deer were killed in the county in the first antlerless season. Officials from Glen Rose and Somervell County Chamber of Commerce mapped plans for Open Tourist Season events beginning May 6 with a school band meet and July Fourth Roundup Days from July 1 to 4. Dan McCarty leads July festivities while Mrs. Alton May heads Labor Day events featuring the Holiday Rambler Club rally at Oakdale Park.
Deadline for vehicle inspections is Saturday April 15. Local law enforcement estimates only about half of Somerville County vehicles have been inspected so far. Long lines form daily at Crabtree Chevrolet Co and Gordon Whitworth's Garage as inspection stations urge residents to comply.
Glen Rose Optimist Club members met Tuesday morning to finalize a dinner at Fellowship Hall First Methodist Church Thursday at 7 30. Wives are asked to bring a dessert or salad and all members are urged to attend. Plans include a Little League program this summer and officer nominations for May. The April membership drive was set with details to come. A supper is planned for April 10 at the Country Kitchen also at 7 30 with all members urged to attend.
An airman from Webb Air Force Base near San Angelo fell asleep at the wheel on Highway 67 about 6 30 a m Easter Sunday causing a one car rollover. Carlyle V Smith and two companions James R Burbage and James M Peachey escaped major injuries and drove to San Angelo. The 1964 Valiant sustained about 500 dollars in damage per Sheriff Speck Strawn the investigating officer.
Granbury Lodge 392 will be honored at a 7:30 p.m. workshop Saturday in the Masonic Hall, Glen Rose. The Grand Lodge of Texas award recognizes outstanding attendance in the fall Masonic Workshop programs, with Charles I. Adkins of Waxahachie presenting and conducting the event.
Hill City Baptist Church announces its regular monthly singing for Sunday afternoon at 2:00. Everyone is invited to attend the event.
Fort Worth engineer Bob Crook with Joe Bingham and George Black met Judge Temple Summers and commissioners to discuss Farm Road 205 extension from White Bluff crossing on the Paluxy to Farm Road 204 at its junction. Future farm road projects were also noted.
Mrs V A Underwood was laid to rest in Tolar Cemetery after a 2 p.m. service at Stephenville Funeral Home. She died Tuesday morning in a Stephenville hospital after a long illness. A Glen Rose teacher for 11 years she had a leave of absence this year. Survived by husband of Tolar and one son Billy Underwood.
Vehicles on state and county roads must carry 1967 license plates by April 1. Sheriff and tax assessor-collector C. M. Strawn said sales in the county remained slow with about 1,170 sets sold by Tuesday, roughly half of last year’s registered vehicles.
Mrs. Leslie Hart, Somervell County Red Cross chair, announced the third annual swim program at Oakdale Park from July 10 to 22 with Paul Schuelke as instructor. Classes cover beginners to life saving, with beginners defined as children starting school next September. No student under six will be admitted to these free lessons.
