Somervell County onion and potato grower honors compete

The Somervell display features a purple onion weighing 1½ pounds with its top cut, judged by Doyle Aston as champion onion grower. Zack B. Evans earned nomination for champion potato grower for his early and plentiful spuds. The Glen Rose park grounds are maintained by the city, with Coll Fuller in charge, and Mrs. Maggie Snyder owning the tract.

Rain Returns to Somervell After Six Damp Days

After six days with only .02 inch, rainfall returned in Glen Rose starting Tuesday night. By 7:30 a.m. officials measured .73 inch in the Ro bert Mack gauge, with nearby sections near an inch total. Temperatures ranged from 55 to 90 degrees as Mack reports the past week.

Fire Dept Receives Donations for School Trip

The Glen Rose Fire Department collected 100 dollars in donations from two area camps to fund a department trip to Texas A&M University's Firemen's School. Chief Dwain Sandlin announced a fundraising road block on the courthouse square for June 23 and noted next meeting is June 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Fire Hall to discuss possibly moving meetings to Tuesdays.

Library Named Nuclear Plant Document Room

The Glenn Rose-Somervell County Library becomes the official local document room for Texas Utilities Generating Company's proposed Comanche Peak nuclear station. A letter from J. R. Neubeiser confirms the library will receive copies of papers and transcripts from public hearings and permit filings for construction and operating licenses.

May Justice Fines Totals Reported

Fines totaling 1202.00 were collected in May per Mrs. Frank C. Willey Justice of the Peace Precinct 3 and H. C. Polley Justice Precinct 1. Precinct 1 paid 85.00 and Precinct 3 1127.00. Driving without a license led with 13 citations. speeding and minor in possession of alcohol tied for second with seven each.

Three Men Plead Guilty In DWI Cases

Three men arrested locally pled guilty in County Court on Wednesday morning last week. They each received a $50 fine and $40 in court costs, plus 30 days probationary jail time. Defendants were Bob T. Finley Walnut Springs Alan D. Pack Stephen ville and Alvis Lighteard Granbury. Finley and Pack had six month license suspensions probationed by Judge Temple Summers. Officer Watson arrested Lighteard and Pack. Dale Wirt visits from Putnam.

Tragedies Strike Two Glen Rose Families This Week

Tragedy struck two Glen Rose families this week as two water accidents claimed three lives. William F. Slate Jr. vanished after jumping from a sailboat to rescue a dog in Lake Grapevine, while his wife tried to aid him with an inflated pillow. Ricky and Danny Cope, nephews of Dr. Gerald Cope, drowned when their car was swept by floodwater near an Austin area crossing. Ricky’s body was recovered. Danny remained missing as rescuers continued noon Wednesday.

New Methodist Pastor Moving Here

Rev. Hubert C. Taylor named new pastor of the First United Methodist Church and Morgan Church in town. He and his wife plan to move from the Lake Granbury area, bringing 20 years of Central Texas ministry. Taylor, former Benbrook pastor, left health leave and returns eager to resume service. they have five grown children and nine grandchildren.

L. G. Tillman Suffers Heart Attack

L G Tillman remains in the intensive care unit at Veterans Hospital in Temple after suffering a heart attack Sunday shortly before noon. He had been a patient about ten days for a checkup and treatment. Friends wish for Red a speedy recovery.
