Community backs Paluxy flood project at hearing

A large Glen Rose crowd joined the State Board of Soil and Water Conservation to back a Paluxy River watershed flood retention plan. Chamber of Commerce President Dan McCarty praised civic effort and urged continued backing, while locals celebrated the turnout as a sign of strong community spirit. Also visiting Glen Rose, Georgia Lighton of Aspen, Colo., described cycling across the region and praised the Glen Rose area before resuming her journey toward Austin and beyond.

High School Awards Presented Tuesday

14 scholarships awarded to graduating seniors. Notable honors include Bennie Nickell receiving the Frank Parrott Award, a $100 cash prize, plus $75 Salutatorian Scholarship from First National Bank and a $1,000 Opportunity Award from A&M University. Mary Parker named valedictorian with a $250 scholarship and potential full tuition at a Texas state or church school.

Jury Commission Choses Venue for Grand Jury

The Jury Commission consisting of John D. Wilson Don Hill and Mrs Joe Don Echols met in the courtroom Monday and selected a pool of prospective Grand Jurors for the second half year. Judge Penn J Jackson is expected to convene 18th District Court soon for this purpose.

Marks Family Celebrates Three Graduates in One Week

Graduation events center on the Mark family of Fort Worth. Warren Marks earned a BA in science at Texas Wesleyan College, with baccalaureate services at First Methodist Church and commencement at the same site. Gary Marks joined the class at TWC, Candy Marks completed Eighth Grade and graduation at the high school, all amid services at First Baptist Church and home celebrations. Warren plans Fort Worth work then graduate studies at North Texas State University, while Gary will attend Texas Wesleyan College in the fall.

W. E. Bard Named State Poet for Year

Members of the Poetry Society of Texas visited Glen Rose to honor W. E. Bard. G. C. Gibbs Jr. hosted 37 members as Bard was announced Poet Laureate of Texas by the State Legislature amid a day of tours from the courthouse to Dinosaur Valley and Bard's Retreat.

Benham Family to Move to Bellevue in July

The Benham family plans to relocate to Bellevue around July 1. Sept. Benham is working toward a doctorate of education at North Texas State University in Denton and has served as counsel or for Clay County Schools since 1964.

Watershed Meeting Draws Large Crowd in Paluxy Area

A Tuesday hearing at Glen Lake Methodist Camp drew between 500 and 600 residents from the Paluxy River watershed to discuss planning and construction of flood retention dams on tributaries. Officials including Henry Turney and local leaders outlined flood damage, river history, and multipurpose benefits, with strong formal support from Hood, Erath, and Somervell counties. Over 400 attendees later enjoyed a barbecue at Oakdale Park.

West Texas Foundation Grants $1000 For Local Scholarships

The Glen Rose Scholarship Fund, started by High School Principal Charles Gibbs and the Glen Rose Reporter, received a $1000 grant from a West Texas foundation. Bill Red Roden and Boyd Laughlin of Midland facilitated the grant. The funds fund one $250 valedictorian scholarship, five $150 scholarships, and $150 raised as three $50 awards to Glen Rose High School graduates chosen by a faculty committee.

Rain Totals Highlight Glen Rose Moisture This Year

Showers in the Glen Rose area dropped 1.24 inches on an official gauge kept by T. J. Davis and brought May totals to 3.89 inches. Rain began early and fell intermittently until mid-morning with minimal runoff, lifting year to date moisture to 10.03 inches.

Helen Brown Opens Gift and Jewelry Store
