Funeral services for J Earl Jackson 66 were held Saturday at 2 00 p m in Boyd Reynolds Funeral Chapel with Rev Lloyd Coker and Rev L D Dutch Mann officiating He died Thursday afternoon en route to a Fort Worth hospital after an extended illness Born August 17 1909 in Saginaw he married LaVoyce Lowry in Colorado City on February 26 1935 A civic worker he helped promote Dinosaur Valley State Park and founded Jacksons Super Market now Red White Food Store In Somervell County 35 years survivors include his wife a son J E Jr two daughters Barbara Simpson and Mrs George Hudson seven grandchildren and three brothers Burial was in Nancy Smith Cemetery The family declined formal comment on service details.
Somervell County Democratic Chairman Jack McCarty set the filing deadline for May 1 primaries as 5 p.m. on Monday Feb. 2. The filing slate includes sheriff tax assessor collector and county attorney positions plus precinct offices in Precincts 1 and 3, with district judge district attorney and state and federal representatives also on the ballot. Several offices show candidates declared including U S Representative Bob Poage reelection and State Senator Tom Creighton reelection. County attorney and two justice of the peace posts had no filings as of Tuesday.
Frank Willey asks voters to return him to the Somervell County Precinct No 3 seat pledging fair impartial judgment on county matters. He notes three years in office, urges checking the commissioner book, and asks support for the May 1 1976 election with instruction to obtain a certificate to vote by March.
Robert Mack announces candidacy for election as Somervell County Precinct No 1 commissioner subject to Democratic primary. He cites 15 months in office, a fair honest record and plans to contact voters before election. Rickey Hawkins returns to school after six weeks out with burns as a fourth grader.
Paul Bone announces his candidacy for Sheriff and Tax Assessor Collector in the Democratic Primary. A Somervell County native, he cites prior experience in the office and pledges to keep the tax office open Saturdays noon for working voters while touring the county to seek support before the first primary.
The Glen Rose area saw little weather change as total moisture reached .10 inches over three events. Temperatures ranged from 18 to 82 degrees during the seven day period, with a recorded low of 10 degrees on Tuesday morning outside the period. Observer Robert Mack compiles the weekly National Weather Service report.
City sales tax receipts rose to 33 137 21 dollars in 1975, the largest gain in a 12 month period since collection began. The 1 percent tax applies to taxable sales within the city limits, and a six year chart shows Glen Rose business growth alongside the tax totals.
The third Monday in February is Washington's birthday and will be observed as a federal holiday. A Social Security representative will be in Glen Rose next Monday to assist residents.
Principal Laurie Moseley and Harry Lister release the third six weeks honor roll totaling 51 students across elementary to senior high. Names show 26 elementary, 10 junior high, 15 high school students with lists by grade and teacher.
Frank Rhodes, Rainbow area resident and local insurance man, announced his candidacy for County Commissioner of Precinct No. 3. He cites lifelong ties to Walnut Springs and Rock Creek areas, a four-child family, and experience running an insurance agency as qualifications, and plans to meet residents to seek votes.
Bob Mahanay of Cleburne announces his candidacy for District Judge of the 18th District Court in the Democratic Primary. He cites his Johnson County roots, legal career as County Attorney and District Attorney, service on bar associations, church and civic leadership, and pledge to give equal attention to Somervell and Johnson counties.
John R. MacLean of Cleburne announces Democratic Primary candidacy for District Attorney of Johnson and Somervell Counties. He lists West Point class of 1961 military service in Germany, Vanderbilt Law School, Texas bar admission, seven years as Johnson County Attorney, and family ties to Cleburne. He seeks voters support in the two-county race.
