Gladewater Municipal Hospital board member David Holcombe spent a week answering all ER calls to learn what constitutes an emergency. He logged multiple wakeful hours, made 10 hospital trips, and noted some calls were genuine emergencies while others were not, including a deaf mute patient case.
Doctors at Gladewater Municipal Hospital told the board they do not anticipate practice changes that would raise patient load, though obesity of specialist access and malpractice costs push surgeons away. They urged inviting area specialists to treat and operate locally while maintaining 64 beds.
Harvey Thomas Ales 29, a former White Oak construction worker, found guilty of murdering his two year old daughter Melenda Ann Ales. A six member jury deliberated two hours and 53 minutes in the 188th District Court. Sentencing underway.
An editor notes the Southland Corporation's regional distribution center, north of Tyler near U S Highway 271 in Owentown, features an advanced computerized automated system for distributing goods to 7-Eleven stores across five states. The facility's vast, highly efficient operations are described as among the nation’s most advanced.
The firm operates about 5,233 7-Eleven stores in 38 states and beyond with a 24 hour model and wide product range. It traces roots to ice selling in the 1930s, the Totem chain, and the first Dallas 7-Eleven in 1948.

A 15 car Missouri Pacific derailment near Canton at 5 15 a m involved loaded butane and PVC cars. An empty butane tank exploded and sparked a large blaze that fire units contained by mid morning. No injuries reported and damage confined to cars and track near the State Highway 19 U S 80 intersection.
Health Officer Dr. C. B. McKenzie urged Gladewater officials to pass and enforce ordinances against junked cars and dilapidated buildings. He linked clutter to mosquito breeding and disease, urging residents to take responsibility for vacant lots while noting the city’s trash service and modest $2 monthly fee.
In a brief meeting the Union Grove School board voted to buy a 1962 GMC used bus as a back-up for the fleet. Supt. R. A. Cooper cited frequent repairs delaying service, noting back-up buses can reduce downtime. Present: J. A. Tuttle, M. M. Shelton, E. S. Truitt, Tommy Bynum, Raybert McCrary, Jesse Bailey.
Funeral services are pending for John Rose 80 of 2802 W Gay. A retired carpenter, he died at 10 45 a m Wednesday in city hospital. Native of Hill County, he was a Methodist Church member. Survivors include wife Nell Rose Gladewater a son Vernon Rose Gladewater three daughters Mrs Carl Lewis Klute Mrs Polly McAdams Phoenix Ariz and Mrs Clint Watts Pineville La a brother H J Rose Angleton also survives.
