The Gladewater school board approved pay scale decisions for teachers based on contract terms and work start dates, debated legality of contract adherence, and planned a legal opinion on contract supercession. They awarded a lighting contract for tennis courts with 1500 watt flood lights and cross arm upgrades, plus study of a court covering. The board noted favorable comments on stadium seating, football Bear squad, band, and majorettes, and considered converting Section X to general admission.
The State Board of Education approved tougher rules for Texas emergency teaching permits effective January 1 1972. Renewal and first grants will require at least a bachelor degree, with limited exceptions for bilingual teachers and certain vocational or ROTC instructors. All emergency permit holders must complete certification within three years. In Sulphur Springs drought persists with only .10 inch of rain in 17 days. In Longview a unidentified white male body was found near the Texas and Pacific tracks south of Fourteenth Street.
The Longview Gregg County Airport unveiled a $400000 Central Reservations Office for Texas International with a ribbon cutting. The center, leased to the airline, will offer instantaneous reservations and store passenger data, employing about 67 initially and expanding to 200 by May. It will serve multiple Texas International destinations and later expand to more cities.
The Gregg County commissioners approved a $3.9 million fiscal year budget 3-0 with Hugh Camp absent. Officials will raise elected officials to 16,000 and give 72 percent increases for other staff once wage-price freezes end mid November. Budget reallocations reflect precinct realignment and road mileage adjustments.
