Phillips killer Faulder sentenced to death

Jurors return a death penalty verdict for Joseph Stanley Faulder, killer of Inez Phillips of Gladewater, after a penalty phase debate. Psychiatrists testified Faulder is sociopathic and likely to kill again, while defense questions questioned expert bias.

Council eyes suits in city litigation briefing

The Gladewater city council, in a called session led by City Attorney Finley and City Manager Williams, authorized Finley to answer a federal suit against the city and ex-officer Bauske filed Oct. 4 by James Thomas Smith. The council also considers defending Mayor and Mrs Goggans over alleged threats from last August. A defamation suit by James Skinner against the Goggans was noted, with Welby Parish retained. The Mary Stanley suit over a Sept. 9 collision with a city trash truck was turned to the fleet liability insurer.

Phillips lauds verdict and local prosecutors

Jack Phillips told The Mirror he believes the jury reached a correct verdict in the case and praised District Attorney Odis Hill and assistant DA Alvin Khoury for their presentation. He also commends Texas Ranger Glenn Elliott and Gregg County Sheriff Office Capt. Bill Roach for their untiring investigation and notes no reward claim was made.

South African policy concerns voiced in interview

South African businessman Neville M. Brazer urged the United States to stop interference and let South Africa handle its internal problems. Brazer, head of Metalock Africa, spoke in Gladewater amid a licensing deal with Spencer Heads Inc. He said South Africa is pro Western and stable, contrasting with rising Marxist-leaning African nations. He stressed he spoke only as a private citizen and noted U.S. frustration with Pretoria's apartheid policies.

Cub Scouts distribute Good Will bags Monday to Wednesday this week. Residents should place usable items such as clothes appliances and shoes in bags for pickup Sunday Nov. 6 after 2 PM.
