Upshur County commissioners voted to raise the tax from 25 to 37.5 percent of the 1.25 per $100 valuation. Precinct 3 Commissioner Charles Still dissented, arguing the increase is necessary but not ideal. exemptions for seniors may reduce effective tax for many homeowners. Inflation and courthouse renovations drive higher operating costs, with no view to expanding services.
Gregg County Commissioners formed the Gregg County Industrial Foundation Inc. a nonprofit to promote industrial development at the county airport. Five members were appointed three from Longview and one each from Gladewater and Kilgore. The foundation may aid manufacturing but cannot receive county tax funds or county credit. Members include Melvin Jenkins E C Johnston Jr and Alvin Wylie.
United Fund totals 51 percent of the 15 000 goal with 7 617 01 raised by Wednesday noon. A door to door campaign by Camp Fire Girls Inc TARS and Boys Baseball Assn will launch Saturday at 10 am from the fire station with tags and area assignments returning at 11 30 am. Last year the drive raised over 300 dollars and organizers aim to double it. The report lists several youth volunteers with photos noting participants from Little Miss Blue Birds and Boys Baseball Assn including Marty Lloyd Amy Pyeatt Angela Kirkland Pam Causey and others.
