All day services are set for Sunday at Parron Church between Hawkins and Shady Grove with special singers invited. Memorial events begin at 10 30 a m and attendees are urged to join.
Division heads for the 1971 72 United Fund drive have been announced with kickoff at the St Clair Restaurant on Friday October 22. Ballots include divisions led by Jack Finley Hugh Mixon Marilyn Godfrey Roy Johnson Bill Wagner the Rev Conrad Winborn Jr Tim Bland John Paul Tallent and Mrs Garfield Hill. The Three Arts Club pledged in Civic and Social, R&K Distributors funded in Mailing, and Mrs Margaret Jenkins led Ministerial with an initial pledge. Major area groups and agencies listed include Youth Baseball Gladewater Benevolent Fund YMCA Salvation Army Red Cross and more with emphasis on donor designations.
Gladewater School Board heard Frank Setzler describe an individualized math program for freshmen at the October meeting. The board approved prior minutes and Arlan Woods tax collection report, noting 93.87 percent of 1971 taxes collected and bills for September. A bid decision was set to purchase three school cars with two station wagons and one sedan, bids to open November 8 at 7 p.m.
Gladewater High School plans a November 12 homecoming honoring the classes of 1931 1941 1951 and 1961. The school seeks addresses for the 1951 class and lists contact numbers for Johnny Sasser John Shipp and Mildred Bowden after hours.
The Bears head to Ki'gore for Friday night football with a 7 30 kickoff. Coach says it is a key road test and aims to build momentum.
A devotional note from Romans 8 38 39 RSV assures that nothing can separate believers from God's love in Christ Jesus. It asks for trust in guidance when the road is dark and uncertain and ends by invoking Jesus as the Way.
Gladewater Chamber reports near certainty of a Sabine river boat ramp after a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department letter. Cost up to 12000 dollars, to be built near Heard's Feed Store with state reimbursement. Other items include art exhibit plans, East Texas Day at the state fair, and membership drive leadership.
Meadows Foundation donates 5000 for a new Gladewater library building. East Texas General American Oil official Mel Pyeatt announces funds. goal is 100000 with 17000 raised so far. The 20000 volume library houses the Texana collection and serves hundreds of residents and students.
Dolph Briscoe, noted Uvalde rancher and gubernatorial hopeful, told the Upshur Gregg Soil and Water Conservation District banquet at Mozelle Johnston school that soil and water stewardship is crucial. He warned of topsoil loss, reservoir silting, and urged continued research to keep Texas agriculture premier, while eight award categories were announced and Grover Bishop of Gilmer High School honored as Outstanding Teacher.
