John Waddell Construction Company won the contract to add 10 patient rooms and expand the lab and offices at Gladewater Municipal Hospital. The board, in a special session with architect Garland Wright, reduced the bid from 287 518 to 273 518 after seven deduct items. savings of 14 107 represented five percent.
Chamber of Commerce directors reviewed Halloween Carnival plans and reported on the Arts and Crafts Festival. They approved a full page ad in the East Texas Vacation Guide, added funds, and set a special meeting for October 11 to discuss hiring a full time manager.
A federal suit filed in Tyler names the City of Gladewater and former police officer Duane Baushire as defendants seeking 50000 in damages. The case stems from a December 18 1976 fire at 436 Tyler Road where officers assisted firemen amid smoke complaints and a man with a rake reportedly refusing to stop the blaze.
The U S Department of Housing and Urban Development funds a 570 960 contract to upgrade 75 low income units in Greenway Village and Weldon Homes. Total obligations reach 600 350 with 29 390 prior allotment. Work includes electrical gas sewer plumbing kitchens baths and security upgrades. Relocation costs total 7 500.

The Gladewater school board, after a 139 page SHWC study, weighs four building plans to relieve overcrowding and budget estimates at about 30 per square foot for new construction. The board asks a lawyer be briefed on land condemnation procedures at the October 10 meeting.
