Gladewater Jaycees on Saturday announced they will retain their franchise with the Miss Texas Association. Franchises in five Texas cities have withdrawn from the Miss Texas Pageant amid four years of disillusionment and backroom pressure. Local leader Dr Frank Butterfield cited ongoing disagreements but said the group will stay in and fight for their beliefs while other cities consider withdrawal.

Elmer Wilson aged 59 was found dead Friday morning in his apartment at 306 Dean St. An inquest by Justice of the Peace Henry Kinney ruled death by natural causes. Wilson, a retired painter and World War II veteran born in Hopkins County, had lived in Gladewater two months after moving from Tyler. He is survived by his mother Leora Lynch two brothers M R Wilson of Tyler and E C Wilson Lampasas a daughter Joy and two sons Glenn and Don. Police Chief Leon Sharrock and deputies investigated.
Waddington Tenery 73 died Thursday in a local hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held Saturday at Friendship Baptist Church with burial in Friendship Cemetery. He lived in the Glasewater area for almost 50 years, born in Poleski Tennessee, a World War veteran and deacon of Friendship Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Miggie, son Eugene Tenery, daughter Jacqueline Mason, two brothers, two sisters, four grandchildren and a great grandchild.
The Gregg County District Attorney’s office will sponsor a 30 minute shoplifting clinic in Longview on Wednesday December 3. The program at Longview National Bank auditorium includes a film The Shoplifter and invites all retail staff to attend for practical crime prevention tips.
White Oak preserves a 19-14 win over Paul Pewitt to reach the quarterfinals for the second straight year. Star plays and a final stop by Louis Bickett and Ric Wood sealed the margin as coach Andy Griffin led the Brahmas to a near upset.
A gasoline transport truck overturned in downtown Rusk on Friday spilling thousands of gallons into a creek. Police reported the truck was righted without a fire, but warned of lingering danger as cattle drank from the water and a spark could ignite residual fuel.
President Nixon unveils a birthdate lottery to decide 1970 draft order. The system aims to limit service to one year for men aged 19 to 20, with the 8 p.m. Monday drawing at Selective Service headquarters in view of news media.
