The Big Sandy council reinstated the on again police reserve force after a recent meeting. Most reserves are Gladewater residents and former Gladewater reserve members who resigned when Jimmie Davis became chief last spring. Current status of the volunteers is reported as up in the air.
The Gladewater school board met to hire Gary Beckworth for land acquisition and reviewed contracts, audits, and a 1976 smoking policy. They discussed selling two 1967 buses, enrollment figures, textbook committee members, and a Christmas party invitation.
Medco Pharmacy reported full participation in the United Fund drive this week. UF Secretary Jo Wiley said a total of 5880.35 had been pledged, still 1870 short of halfway to the 15500 goal. Contributors include Mr and Mrs Jess Wood and others.
A dense roster of individuals and local entities including United Way Rev B F Risinger Jr Gilbert Thornton J Lewis Ingle David Crosby and many others appears in a community page. Also listed are groups such as Gladewater Rotary Club businesses Arrow Package Store Randall Hill and local families.
Gladewater Municipal Hospital will raise private and semi private room rates to 68 and 63 dollars respectively and emergency room fee to 12 dollars starting December 1. A ten percent across the board salary raise for all employees was approved to offset higher costs, with a single dissenting vote from Bud Morse.
Big Sandy Assistant Police Chief Richard Lingle responded to a call Sunday and rescued two Mexican men trapped in a dangerous area near Church breaks. The incident ended without fatalities and authorities clarified the men were in distress due to hazardous conditions.
Gladewater First Assembly of God held a Sunday groundbreaking for a $79,000 education complex to be a 4400 square foot facility with classrooms library conference nursery and fellowship hall. Completion is planned for late February or early March 1978.
Friends and relatives are invited to the Golden Wedding Anniversary for Mr. and Mrs Fred Bond of Rt. 2 Big Sandy on Sunday November 27 from 5 to 7 pm. Their children host the celebration.
The Gladewater store, one of 15 in the area, aims to open around December 1 with Aldridge as manager designate. He has interviewed about 125 applicants and plans to staff 20 positions, moving to the store offices Friday. The Gibson chain, independent from Gibson Discount Centers Inc, operates about 650 stores in 26 states.
Funeral services for Mrs Alva G. Porter of 706 West Clair will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in Rader Funeral Chapel Longview with Reverends Wayne McKay and Gil Thornton officiating. Interment at Hillcrest Cemetery Texarkana. She died Wednesday after a short illness at Good Shepherd Hospital Longview. She was 76 and a former White's Auto Supply clerk born in Texarkana. Survivors: daughter Edna Rachel Longview. brother Roy Rodgers Ore City. sister Ira Vaughan Commerce. granddaughters Mona Gruppi Longview Billie Vanderburg Houston Tina Rachel Longview. one great grandchild.
Chief Jimmy Davis announced that Officer Charles Livingston has been assigned to complete the Department of Public Safety breathalyzer unit course at Lamar University in Beaumont. The five day course began Monday and will certify Livingston to place the DPS unit into operation.
Chromalloy American Corporation announced a record nine months earnings at its Eleventh Seminar in St. Louis. More than 300 executives attended at the Colony Hotel in Clayton with the theme Breaking the Billion Dollar Barrier. Dean Milkes represented K Wolens, the Texas based retailer group.
Gladewater Kiwanis Club sponsors the Christmas parade on Monday December 5. Lonnie H. Van Zandt urges organizations to submit entries by calling the chamber of commerce at 845 2626 and lineup begins at 4 p.m. Prizes of 75 50 and 25 will go to the most beautiful and most original floats.
