Man Held In Shooting In Nederland Texas Case

A Nederland man is in Gregg County jail after a shooting near Clarksville City wounded 76 year old Mittie Wade in the foot. Harvey Ray Haywood, 49, son-in law of the victim, was charged with assault with intent to murder with a $7500 bond after being arrested at Wade home on Old Longview Highway. Mrs Wade and her two daughters were present during the incident.

Big Doings For Homecoming at Bear Stadium

The annual GHS Homecoming festivities begin at 7 10 p m on the field at Bear Stadium Friday. The pregame ceremony introduces the Football Sweetheart for 1971, the runner up and four duchesses. The Sweetheart’s name will be revealed during the event. The Sweetheart is chosen by the football team. On Thursday November 11 a GHS parade starts at 4 30 p m downtown and ends in front of city hall for a giant pep rally.

Robbery Suspect Bond Set in Ben Wheeler Bank Heist

Jimmy Lawrence Davis, 26, a suspect in the Monday morning First State Bank of Ben Wheeler robbery in Van Zandt County, was arrested Tuesday about 12:38 a.m. on West Gay Ave by Lt. Charles Evans and Patrolman Troy Godwin. His bond was set at 25000 after he appeared before Justice of the Peace Charles Cashell. Davis, formerly of Gladewater and now of Fort Worth, was sent to Van Zandt County Jail. Two companions were arrested and later released. None of the stolen about 7000 has been recovered. Davis has prior federal charges related to Whitehouse burglaries and the Ore City bank robbery.

O G Johnston reported 1972 73 enrollment will rise about 50 students and push Gladewater High into 3AAA for athletics. The district expects enrollment to exceed 600 the following year. The board discussed boosting the program with incentives including a tenth grade football coach as JV participation dwindled this season.
