UG Union Grove votes to elect local officials amid lawsuit

In the newly incorporated UG Union Grove community Tuesday voters chose a mayor and five councilmen plus a town marshal. All offices had no opposition except write-in Jay Pepper with 11 votes for marshal. George Smith had 5 votes for mayor. Councilmen results: Huffman 42, R Smith 41, Cummins 42, Harrison 42, Boshear 41. Ullrith elected marshal with 34 votes. The incorporation suit filed last August in the 115th District Court remains pending.

Briscoe Wages Tax Talk On East Texas Campaign Swing

Gov Dolph Briscoe kicked off a Dallas rally drawing up to 10000 supporters then tour through East Texas to 26 cities with wife Janey. He criticized federal controls on energy and urged deregulation while praising Senate restraint and energy programs. The stop at Gilmer included a convalescent center visit and comments on highway and hospital projects.

FAA approves city airport dirt work on 3400 foot runway

City Manager Tony N. Williams announced FAA inspectors from Fort Worth reviewed the completed dirt work on the 3400 foot runway and gave approval. Ron Hess and engineers from Knowlton English Flowers Inc of Bedford and contractor John A. Petty Construction Co of Longview verified the work and approved it. Phase II may start about six months early with bids expected for the December council meeting.

Gil Craig Dies After Lengthy Illness in Tyler

J.E.G. Gil Craig Senior 81 of 605 Daniels died at 5 30 Monday at University of Texas Health Center Tyler after a prolonged illness. Funeral at St Marks Episcopal Wednesday 10 a m with Rev Walter Ellis. Committal Saturday 10 a m at Gladewater Memorial Park. Survivors include daughter Sally Auclair son J E G Craig Jr six grandchildren and three sisters. Pallbearers listed.

Funeral services for Claud Pope 75 longtime Gladewater resident will be held Thursday at 2 PM in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel. The Rev B F Risinger Jr officiates with interment in Memorial Park. He died Tuesday in Tyler after a long illness. Survivors include wife Reba two sons Louie and Donald Pope a daughter Claudine Sullivan a brother Gay Pope and Harry Pope 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Kilgore man kidnapped and killed in Upshur County

In Upshur County a Kilgore man, Willie Lee Wallace Sr., was kidnapped near a Gilmer convenience store and shot dead. Carrien Tidwell and Jo Ann Tidwell, both 38, of Rt. 2 Gilmer, are charged with murder and kidnapping. Bond set at 25000 each. Arraignment to be handled by Gregg County.

Faulder Receives Death For Capital Murder

Judge Marcus Vascocu formally sentences Joseph Stanley Faulder, Canadian, to death for capital murder in the death of Mrs. Inez Phillips of Gladewater. An eight woman four man jury found him guilty. a new trial motion was set for 9 a.m. November 17, with Faulder approving court-appointed attorney Vernard Solomon for the appeal.

One Dead In Wreck Near Gladewater

A Winona woman, Marjorie Justice, 57, was killed when a car from Big Sandy side swiped a tree 400 yards outside Gladewater after a police pursuit on U S 271. Driver Robert Earl Davis, 29, and passenger Larry Donzell Strickland, 18, were injured and taken to hospitals.

The city Planning and Zoning Commission schedules a Thursday November 17 meeting at 7 p.m. in the council chamber to review two zoning change requests. One seeks to rezone Lot 8 Block 62 original townsite from Light Commercial to Restricted Commercial for a recreation area and alcohol service. The second requests a 50 by 270 foot parcel of the Carl Rhodes Survey south of U.S. Highway 80 west of Moody Creek to switch from Heavy Industrial to SF-8.

Gregg and Upshur County Vote on Seven Constitutional Amendments

Gregg County voters approve five of seven amendments with 1,591 ballots cast while Upshur County sees 649 votes. Upshur rejects amendment 6 electronic funds transfer 423 to 217 and turns down amendment 7 judicial commission authority 327 to Gregg’s by results. Gregg passes amendment 1 expansion of the Court of Criminal Appeals 992 to 499 and amendment 3 denying bond to detainees on bail 1,254 to 285.
