UG Union Grove votes to elect local officials amid lawsuit
In the newly incorporated UG Union Grove community Tuesday voters chose a mayor and five councilmen plus a town marshal. All offices had no opposition except write-in Jay Pepper with 11 votes for marshal. George Smith had 5 votes for mayor. Councilmen results: Huffman 42, R Smith 41, Cummins 42, Harrison 42, Boshear 41. Ullrith elected marshal with 34 votes. The incorporation suit filed last August in the 115th District Court remains pending.

FAA approves city airport dirt work on 3400 foot runway
City Manager Tony N. Williams announced FAA inspectors from Fort Worth reviewed the completed dirt work on the 3400 foot runway and gave approval. Ron Hess and engineers from Knowlton English Flowers Inc of Bedford and contractor John A. Petty Construction Co of Longview verified the work and approved it. Phase II may start about six months early with bids expected for the December council meeting.

In Upshur County a Kilgore man, Willie Lee Wallace Sr., was kidnapped near a Gilmer convenience store and shot dead. Carrien Tidwell and Jo Ann Tidwell, both 38, of Rt. 2 Gilmer, are charged with murder and kidnapping. Bond set at 25000 each. Arraignment to be handled by Gregg County.

One Dead In Wreck Near Gladewater
A Winona woman, Marjorie Justice, 57, was killed when a car from Big Sandy side swiped a tree 400 yards outside Gladewater after a police pursuit on U S 271. Driver Robert Earl Davis, 29, and passenger Larry Donzell Strickland, 18, were injured and taken to hospitals.
