The Texas Highway Commission awarded a contract to A. J. Wallace & Son Inc of Dallas for a pedestrian overpass on U S 259 in Kilgore seen by Kilgore Junior College. The low bid was 88061 90 dollars and work will take about 75 working days under the supervision of District Engineer W W Potter and Engineer Ralph W Kutzer of Longview.

Boy Scouts from Troops 192 194 and 197 will display scouting work at Gladewater High School auditorium Tuesday at 730 pm for prospective scouts and parents. Troop 192 sponsored by St Mark’s Episcopal Church, Troop 194 by the Rotary Club, Troop 197 by the Lions Club.

Memorial Baptist Names Rev Nipper Interim Pastor

Memorial Baptist Church has called Rev. V. M. Nipper as interim pastor. He will fill the pulpit starting Sunday Nov. 2 and serve until a regular pastor is chosen. Nipper previously led Reklaw Baptist Church for 11 years and Laird Hill Baptist Church for 22 years, plus roles as school superintendent in Garrison and Spring Hill. He has been active in denominational affairs.

Scouts Collect Good Will Bags for annual drive

Gladewater Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts prepare for the annual Good Turn collecting items for Good Will Industries. Bags were handed out last week and residents are asked to place usable repairable items inside. Scouts meet at the depot Sunday at 2 p.m. to begin the drive.

Abernathy reports Hawaii trip and eastern tour to Lions

Quentin Abernathy president of East Texas and Texas Chambers of Commerce spoke to the local Lions Club about his Honolulu Hawaii visit with the American Bankers Association and an East Texas Chamber industrial tour of eastern cities. He described Robert Innes CORE appeal for six million dollars and a vandalism incident at a bankers exhibit. He warned rates will rise with inflation and high interest likely into 1970.

Longtime Warren Petroleum retiree Ovid Phillips honored in Glade

Ovid Phillips ended a 43 year career with Warren Petroleum and was saluted at a Contessa Inn Longview retirement party in October. Attendees from Gladewater Oklahoma New Mexico and Tulsa shared remembrances of his early industry days and leadership. Phillips supported the church Lions Masons Eastern Star Red Cross and Methodist activities and his wife Reba was praised for her partnership. A party gift certificate closed the event.

Meade Retires After 38 Years Delivering Mail By Horseback

Leon Meade of Gladewater ends a long postal career at 2 p.m. Friday Oct 31. A 1931 start as a substitute rural carrier in Honey Grove and 20 years as a clerk. He received an engraved wrist watch from coworkers in a brief ceremony attended by his wife Mary Alice.
