Abernathy Award Honors Gladewater and Union Grove Seniors
Outstanding senior boys and girls at Gladewater High School and Union Grove School received the C Q Abernathy Rotary Club award during assemblies this week. Lucinda Moore Bryan Kirbo Lela Davis and Wayne Smith were recognized for scholarship character citizenship leadership and service. Mary Jane Abernathy plaque went to her as band drum major.

Sissy Farenthold toured East Texas with stops in Longview and Tyler. In Longview she faced questions on the Texas Rangers role nationwide and marijuana laws. She noted Texas and Rhode Island have felon penalties on first offenses and discussed proposed reforms from the 67th legislature.

Summer swimming lessons start June 5 at the school pool
Mary Jane Wiley, a licensed Red Cross instructor, will teach beginners, advanced beginners, intermediates, junior seniors lifesaving. Registration begins May 30 when the pool opens. A season ticket is required for all sessions from June 5 to August 4 with defined time slots for each class.
Services Saturday for Wm. A. Spivey
William A. Spivey 78, resident of Gladewater since 1931, died Friday. Services Saturday at 4 in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. Herman Reagh and Mack Lee officiating. Burial in Memorial Park. Spivey, a retired Humble Oil Co. pumper, is survived by his wife Joe Alice and children Delton Ervin, two daughters, five sisters, three brothers, eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Hospital board approves reappointments and scholarships at Gladewater
Gladewater Municipal Hospital board heard an auditor report showing good order and strong working capital for the year ending March 31. Three scholarships were awarded to Karen Enloe Amy Newsome and Teresa Berry to cover tuition at Kilgore College School of Nursing.

The event featured introductions by supervisors and a D ixieland music interlude with prayers and closing remarks.
