Rabies Warning Issued Across Upshur Gregg Counties

Upshur County sanitation inspector Clifford Wallace warned Gladewater and nearby communities of a rabies epidemic noted to have reached the northern edge of Gregg County. He urged vaccination for dogs and cats and advised removing any daylight sightings of skunks foxes coyotes or raccoons as likely rabid.

Kilgore College Honors 44 Students Across 14 Texas High Schools

The Kilgore College President's Superior Student Award goes to 44 students from 14 Texas high schools recognizing two categories academic superiority and talent. Seven additional awards honor special talents. Recipients gain full tuition and fees for one semester renewable for up to four semesters upon GPA review.

Gladewater Bears Win 14-AA District Title In Bi-District Run

Gladewater High School clinched the District 14-AA crown with a 4-3 victory over White Oak after a 14-0 opening win. Pitcher Branmiett Lockett earned the first game win. Evan Spicer and Emmett Lockett sparked late scoring. The Bears prepare for Linden-Kildare in the bi-district at 7 p.m. Thursday with a potential third game at a neutral site. Admission is 1 for adults and 75 cents for students.

Gladewater Day Care Center Jubilation Sparks Community Drive

A Gladewater day care center run by Mrs. Phyllis Reagh serves 22 children aged 3 to 5. Mothers organize a rummage sale in the old Datches Building to fund needs including a new refrigerator and flooring, with support from multiple churches and the United Fund.

Trustees OK funding and travel changes at Union Grove

Union Grove School trustees approved applying for several federal funding programs and continuation of current ones. A new policy requires superintendent authorization for all extracurricular trips and bus usage, with mileage funded at 48 cents to the transportation fund and audit tickets kept. Superintendent R A Cooper was directed to negotiate student insurance options for Union Grove children. All members attended.

Big Sandy Wildcat Band to Present Final Concert

The Big Sandy Wildcat band led by Ron Best will perform a final concert Thursday at 7 30 p m in the high school gym. The program includes a variety of numbers from this year s repertoire with admission set at 1 for adults and 50c for children.

Gladewater High School Holds Baccalaureate and Commencement

Baccalaureate services for 119 Gladewater High School seniors will be Sunday at 8 p m in the high school auditorium with Rev K R Nixon delivering the sermon and Rev C B Warren offering the invocation. Commencement is set for Friday May 28 at Bear Stadium with a weather contingency moving exercises to the high school auditorium and Rev Roy Alexander reading scripture.

Funeral are held for Elzie Herron 62 in Gilmer

Funeral services for Elzie lee Herron 62 of Rt 2 were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev J A Allen officiating. Burial followed at Enon Cemetery in Gilmer. Herron died Tuesday at 6 25 a m in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Born May 24 1913 in Lindsay Oklahoma he moved to Gladewater seven years ago. He was a retired truck driver and member of West Mineola Baptist Church. Survived by three sons Phillips Longview Ricky Galveston Richard Ft Worth. three daughters Mrs Bille Coffey Denver Colorado Mrs Dorothy Anglin Ennis Betty Albuquerque New Mex. two sisters Mrs Gertrude Gordon Ft Worth Mrs Effie Ballard Denton. 12 grandchildren. Pallbearers were Wayne Pope Ben Milam Wayne Coffey Cecil Sinclair Curtis Leach Billy Roy Wells.
