School board heard a detailed explanation and watched a Systems 80 demonstration for a summer reading program at Middle School aimed at grades 1 through 7. The program includes pre and post tests, two daily sessions May 31 to July 9, 45 minutes in class plus 45 in the library, and targets readers one year or more below grade level or with family income under 3000 dollars.

Johnston Named Assistant Superintendent in Gladewater ISD
Johnston, longtime Middle School principal and Gladewater native, was named Monday night as Assistant Superintendent for Instruction in the Gladewater Independent School District. The vacancy follows Dr. Bill Holliman’s resignation. Johnston also oversees special education programs, effective July 1. He has served 16 years in Gladewater schools, taught at Union Grove previously, and was the district’s first Middle School principal. He and wife Georgia Ruth, a Union Grove teacher, have two daughters and reside on Mustang.

World fiddlers festival set in Crockett with defending champ present
The 35th annual worlds champion fiddlers festival will be held Friday June 11 in Crockett with Beta Sigma Phi as hostess. Contestants from across the nation will compete and defending world champion Larry Franklin will attend to defend his 1970 crown. Other items include a Shell employees covered dish supper in Gladewater and a puppy giveaway.

City to hold public hearing on annexation along US 271
The city council schedules a public hearing for Thursday May 13 at 7 30 p m in city hall court room on annexing land along US 271 south from the Sabine River bridge about 1 7 miles to the Gregg Smith County line.
