Gladette Kelly Louvier called his mother in Port Arthur Friday to report that L. J. Louvier, age 84, was abducted Thursday May 1 by three men who seized his car and money then left him stranded. He was later rescued and returned to town to alert police. The car was found later in Port Arthur.
Gladewater city council will review seven ordinances covering plumbing fire prevention electrical gas dilapidated structures housing and building at the regular May meeting Thursday night. Bids for a new tractor and a mini pumper fire truck will be opened and considered. An engineer will be selected.
First State Bank announces new Bicentennial design Series E Savings Bonds available in $25, $50, and $100 denominations. Governor Dolph Briscoe proclaims Minute Man Week May 5 9 as part of Texas observances. President C Q Abernathy notes the bank’s aim to encourage individual participation in national financial affairs.
The Gladewater High School Home Economics Cooperative Education program hosted an employer employee banquet with Superintendent Roy Johnson as speaker. Fifteen girls in the learn while you earn program work at local firms while attending classes. The event highlighted attitudes for job success and cooperation in the community.
The Jaycees met at Rick Dudley’s home and voted to adopt by laws and pursue land for a new Jaycee park. Members approved orange jackets for vests and authorized a fundraiser by raffling a shotgun to offset park expenses. The group numbers 20 members.

Gladewater High School will award top scholastic honors to Carol Bruce Trecia Van Houten and Kerry Lee at the May 26 commencement. Bruce averages 97.277 Van Houten 96.780 Lee 95.907 Fifteen of 99 graduates will receive honors. Baccalaureate is May 18.

Pacific Avenue include Sunday school at 9 30 a m devotional at 11 a m and evangelistic service at 7 30 p m Tuesday Bible teaching at 8 p m and Friday evangelistic service at 8 p m The Rev John T Talley pastor invites all to return to the old paths of righteousness and holiness of heart A collection is never taken.
Austin Whitley 84 of 1511 North Ivy Lea and a longtime Gladewater resident died Sunday. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with E. J Bingham of Pasadena officiating. Burial followed at Gladewater Memorial Park. A Shell Oil Company retiree, he was born in Alabama and a World War I veteran. Survivors include his wife, one daughter Evelyn Blanche Mounce of Reno, Nevada, two sisters, two brothers, two grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Oron Hudson of 214 Glade Ave. will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Chapel. Burial will follow at Gladewater Memorial Park. Mr. Hudson died Wednesday morning in a Shreveport hospital.
