Glade Creek Bridge Opens to Traffic in City
The Glade Creek Bridge was opened to traffic Monday afternoon. City Manager Tony Williams said approaches would be completed in a few days and an asphalt covering laid. Built by the state at a cost of 88000 dollars, the new structure marks a local infrastructure milestone.

Palmour rites held Friday at Mateoly Stone Funeral Chapel
Funeral services for Paul A. Palmour 83 longtime Gladewater resident were conducted Friday at noon at Mateoly Stone Funeral Chapel. Officiating was Dr Hey B F Risinger pastor First Baptist Church. Palmour died early Friday morning in a local nursing home. He was born November 11 1902 in Chelsea Oklahoma and retired in 196? as an oilfield superintendent for Getty Oil Co. He belonged to United Methodist Church Scottish Rite 4th Consistory in McAlester Oklahoma and held a Surname pin. Surviving are his widow Georgia one son Harold of Humble a daughter Mrs Wilma Easton of Come of a sister Mrs Roe Sutherlin of Central Point Oregon three grandchildren one great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. Pallbearers were Rob Gullett UL Reynolds Joe Eaton Jimmy Lynch Don Palmour and Sid Palmour.

Virs Carlisle Rites Held for 76 Year Old Gladewater Resident
Funeral services for Mrs Virgilia Carlisle 76 lifelong Gladewater resident were conducted Monday at 10 am in Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Murphy Phillips officiating. Burial followed in Rock Springs Cemetery. She died Friday in a local hospital. Born January 26 1900 in Gladewater she was a Church of Christ member. Survivors include two sons Samuel and Walter both of the city two daughters Mrs Carlien Pruett of the city and Mrs Havel Levy of Waco two granddaughters Pallbearers were David Jordan Billy Ray Vernon Jim Jobe Jimmy Vernon Bernard Levy and William Landers.

Gladewater Students Sweep Local Knights Essay Contest
Two Gladewater High School students won top prizes in a Knights of Pythias essay contest sponsored by Pythian Lodge Number 26 in Longview. Harriett Clark Jones took first with the topic What Do I See in America from 1776-1976 and received a $25 savings bond for state competition entry. John Beckworth Arthur Fort chaired the event noting it was open to grades nine through twelve.

Manager Dies in Mineola Road Accident
Wardell Daniels Jr., 20, manager of the Gladewater Ben Franklin Store, died after his southbound car hit a diesel rack on SH 37 five miles north of Mineola. Wayne Webb of Bokehito Oklahoma drove the diesel truck. Webb was uninjured. Daniels died at a Mineola hospital. He is survived by his parents, three sisters, and grandparents. Services were held Wednesday at East Chapel CME Church with burial at Mineola City Cemetery. White Funeral Home assisted.

Gladewater Democrats contest two runoff elections June 3
In Gregg County Precinct Three the Democrats held a primary runoff with Hugh Camp and Jimmie Muckleroy. Camp led 1,666 to 1,545 for Muckleroy, claiming a ninth consecutive term as commissioner. Travis Byrd had 756. County chair race saw Herbert Boyland leading Benson 3,800 to 3,266 with Melvin Copeland third. Voter registration deadline is May 6 for the June 5 second primary.

Car thieves caught in act near Gladewater
Police nabbed two Tyler men Billy Lowell and George Nail after a car theft in Gladewater on Locker Plant Road. They fled toward Longview in a 1969 Torino but were chased by Gregg County and city officers. Bail set at 3500 each. both men arraigned on theft over 200. women surrendered with statements, charges pending.

July 4 Parade Plans In Gladewater Prompt Registration
The July 3 Bicentennial parade committee invites all participating organizations to register early for the downtown parade on Saturday July 4. The event is led by the Gladewater Kiwanis Club with Harold Wells as committee chairman, contactable at 845-2477.
