Lullabying a daughter born April 15 at Hart Clinic Hospital the girl named April Michelle weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces. Grandparents are W. A. Jackson and W. B. Holcomb with the latter from Big Sandy.

Messner Directs GHS Band in Final Concert

Buzz Messner, Gladewater High School band director, led his last concert at the spring program. The 8th grade Middle School band opened, Walter Phillips directing. A reception followed with crepe paper Maypole decor and a gift for Messner from Mrs. J. O. Sims as tributes from students, including a poem by Rusti Coleman.

Gladewater Library Hosts Age Restricted Centennial Photo Exhibit

May marks a Gladewater Public Library centennial event with a display open Sunday 1 to 4 p.m. Elderly residents 40 and older can submit baby pictures. Mozelle Berryhill chairs the exhibit inviting all ages to explore local history and familiar faces as they were. The Sabine River, previously at 36.30 feet, receded to 32.70 feet by Saturday noon, staying above flood stage 26 feet with potential rise if rains return.

GHS Choir Set Spring Concert. Bennett's Final Year

The GHS choir directed by retiring Ken Bennett presents a spring formal on Tuesday May 8 at 8 p.m. in the GHS auditorium. Admission is free. After the concert a reception by the Choral Parents Club is in the Home Economics room. The event precedes the Region IV UIL contest at Kilgore College. A special seating section for former students is reserved.

The Hawkins school board hires James M. Mason of Henderson as Superintendent effective July 1 for a three year term. Mason has served Henderson schools since 1952 and led educational services for the past five years.

Glade FFA Chapter Wins Awards At Show And Sale

Gladewater High School's FFA chapter directed by Carl Jackson earned nine blue ribbons two red ribbons and trophies including reserve champion and best fitted at the annual steer show and sale at the livestock auction barn Eleven steers were entered with Gladewater animals placing in the top five Ray Thomas of Hallsville won grand champion with a 1060 pound steer Scott Fields of Longview tied for reserve champion with an 820 pound steer purchases included by Longview Savings & Loan Association and others. Jackson thanked local businessmen for support in his first year as instructor.
