Union Grove FFA team to A&M contest

Fifteen Union Grove FFA Chapter members will take part in the Texas A&M University practice judging contest in College Station on March 24. Teams qualified by winning in class elimination contests to prepare for the Area judging contest at East Texas State University on April 7.

Merchants hear Centennial Week plans meeting details

Gladewater merchants are invited to a meeting at the high school auditorium on April 3 at 7 30 p m to hear detailed plans for Centennial Week events July 28 to August 4. Post cards were mailed to firms asking for representation and substitutes may write to the Centennial Building at 109 East Pacific with firm and representative names.

Glade Tennis and Swim Club Announces East Texas Facility

The Glade Tennis and Swim Club Inc announces a private family oriented facility led by President Jerry Williams and Secretary Dale Barton. The planned seven acre site on East Allison Street beside Highway 80 will include four lighted tennis courts a junior Olympic pool a multi level clubhouse and a pro shop with youth programs and tournaments. The group estimates a quarter million dollar total investment with a tentative summer grand opening and year round amenities for all ages.

Senate panel hears unitization testimony

The Senate Natural Resources Committee spent seven and a half hours with testimony on SB 120 the compulsory oil field unitization measure. The panel sent the bill to a subcommittee for further study while a House version advanced. Key figures include sponsor Sen Jack Hightower and subcommittee members Len Peyton McKnight Betty Andujar and H J Blanchard. Opponents such as Robert B Payne Wesley West and Leon Hays urged continued caution with the majority consent concept. The bill would let 75 percent of royalty owners control production within a unit subject to Railroad Commission approval. West argued against the plan noting existing voluntary unitization requires unanimous consent.

Koonce Named White Oak School Superintendent

Phil Barnhill announced CM Mickey Koonce will become White Oak superintendent July 1. Koonce, 37, currently heads Midlothian schools and previously served Grapevine roles. He plans to move to White Oak mid June and will work with retiring E B Carrington who led since 1959.

Longview Men Charged In Elks Club Robbery

Gregg County sheriff’s office reports three Longview men arrested in connection with the Elks Club armed robbery on March 11. About $8,000 reportedly taken. two suspects were nabbed March 13 and one on March 11. Thomas Langdale 21, Roy Burgess 21, Gerald Langdale 24 face charges. Langdales held on bond while Gerald Langdale released after posting bond.

Gladewater Plans Centennial Chamber Banquet

Banquet tickets are selling briskly for Gladewater's Chamber of Commerce annual banquet to be held Friday night. John Ben Shepperd will speak. Centennial attire from 100 years ago will be worn. A reception follows at the Chamber office. Tickets at the Chamber office before Monday advised. The event celebrates Gladewater's 100th anniversary with a sellout likely.

Rainfall totals hit double digits in March storms

Rainfall continues to make news as 1.5 inches falls in a 24 hour period from Friday 7 a.m. to Saturday 7 a.m. This brings the unofficial March total to 10.9 inches, with 0.5 inch added during March 16 through March 22.

Deputy chancellor assumes new duties at Ambassador College Big Sandy

Ronald L. Dart, named deputy chancellor of Ambassador College Big Sandy, arrived to take full responsibilities as Texas campus head. He previously headed the Foreign Educational Service of Ambassador College and Worldwide Church of God, succeeding Leslie L. McCullough who returned to Pasadena. Dart, 39, and his wife Allie have deep Texas ties and a long career with the church.

East Texas Industrial Exposition Set for April

Longview is set to host the second annual East Texas Industrial Exposition at the Gregg County Fairgrounds April 4 to 7. The Longview Chamber of Commerce reports about 50 reservations, with manufacturers from across the state showing keen interest and an expected 100 or more displays. Highlights include Little Miss and Little Mr. Industry, employee awards, scholarships, live entertainment, door prizes, and school tours.
