Mr and Mrs Bill Roddy attended the funeral Tuesday in Wolfe City for his father who died Sunday after a lengthy illness. Both Roddy adults are Gladewater school faculty members.
The 40th annual Gladewater Chamber of Commerce banquet is expected to reach capacity in the Middle School cafeteria with 300 seats. Only a few tickets remained after Tuesday noon’s meeting, marking the first sellout before the event. President Bill Langford led the final 1970 71 chamber year meeting and urged support for incoming President Royce Ford.
Friends of the Nicholson Memorial Public Library at 400 So Green St Longview plan a 2 30 Sunday event with three Texas authors Sam Blair Evelyn Op penheimer and Bert Kruger Smith attending for autographs and talks from Dallas Austin and dates not specified. A CHAMBER meeting discusses House Bill 54 urging opposition and a plan for a Gregg County aviation show including the Navy Blue Angels.
Angela Nixon a seventeen year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Sam Nixon is treated for Hodgkins disease at Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City. Friends opened an Angela Nixon Fund at First State Bank to help cover continuing expenses. Angela, a former Union Grove High School junior, was born Feb 15 in Swamp City and is granddaughter of Mr and Mrs J M Nixon and Mr and Mrs W E Hobbs.
Youth Opportunity Unlimited urges area employers to contact chairman David Holcombe and committee members about summer job openings for youths. The group will match applicants to positions for interviews but warns no guaranteed placements. Holcombe urges local business support to help Gladewater’s youth.
Veteran Gladewater Police Chief Leon Sharrock announced his retirement and Oris B. Morrow was named chief by City Manager Bill Langford at the first annual Gladewater Police Appreciation banquet held at St. Clair Restaurant attended by about 60 officers plus families and city officials. Mayor Jim Holcomb led the event.
Chandler Texas celebrates the birth of Volume One Number One Chandler News with owner editor Bettye Mastin of Tyler at the launch. The ceremony honors city police chief Sharrock and chief Morrow for service and courage after a January gunpoint shooting.
State Railroad Commission Chairman Byron Tunnell activated the flow of crude oil at Humble Oil & Refining Company’s new treating unit near Hawkins, Texas. The ceremony drew hundreds including Humble officials, East Texas notables, Hawkins Mayor Petty, and Commissioner Langdon. Tunnell praised Hawkins field production as a major asphaltic crude source supporting road building materials.
A devotional prayer asks forgiveness for weak awareness of God's presence. It cites Psalm 121 and affirms reliance on the Lord as Creator of heaven and earth.

Funeral services for Ora Wood 77 of Union Grove were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. Conrad Winborn officiating. Burial followed in Rosedale Cemetery. Mrs. Wood died Saturday in a Gilmer convalescent home after a lengthy illness. She was a native of Alabama and lived in Union Grove 39 years. Survivors include two sons Raymond and Morgan, four brothers, three sisters, and one grandchild.
