Kilgore College Dodson Auditorium hosts the closing performance of the Kilgore Community Concert season titled Men of Song on March 25 at 8 p.m. Season tickets cost 8 for adults and 4 for children.
Longview hosted the Union Grove High School all-sports banquet at Wyatt's Cafeteria last Friday night. Former SMU quarterback Mack White spoke, recalling the 1966 Mustang SWC title team. Seniors Wanda Steelman and Donnie Wilson named Most Athletic. Donnie earlier earned all-district honors.
A prayer for joyful giving echoes at Union Grove where Superintendent Garland Ferguson introduced head coach Glynn Johnston and thanked seniors. Johnston praised the winning team and celebrated the district grid trophy while recognizing players and contributors.
C W Dawson of Gladewater was named the States finest journalism teacher at a two day Inter scholastic League Press Conference closing in Austin. Texan Talk from Sam Houston High Arlington won outstanding paper honors. The awards highlighted long serving teachers Miss Mary Frances Freeman Beaumont and Mrs Ruth McAnnally San Benito. The conference drew over 3000 student journalists to The University of Texas for workshops and discussions.
Gladewater Saddle Club hosts the East Texas Horse Show and Rodeo Association event at the rodeo arena with 35 judging and 37 performance classes. Halter entries cost 2 dollars and performance entries 1 dollar. 843 entries set a 1968 record and a special flag race for riders nine and under is scheduled at 1 p.m.
First Lieutenant David Hale of the U.S. Army was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry during a Vietnam action. He and his wife plan to depart March 26 for duty in Germany after visits in Washington, D.C., and Alabama. Hale, a 1967 West Point graduate, served in Vietnam for a year and is the grandson of Mr and Mrs John E Klohr.
