American Legion to Mark Birthday at 50th Anniversary Supper

The George Martin Post 281 will mark the American Legion fifty years with an all member covered dish supper at the Legion Hut on the Dallas Highway. District leaders Larry Lahaie Mary Buckley join John T. Moore in inviting Legion and Auxiliary members and guests. The event recalls the Legion Caucus opening in Paris on March 17, 1919 and notes the group’s push for veterans rights, patriotism, and opposition to anti-Americanism.

Gladewater Legion Post: Oldest City Group Since 1933

The Gladewater Legion post, chartered in 1933, is the city’s oldest service organization with continuing activity. It has 71 members under Commander Moore and Post Adjutant Reuben Painter. The post and auxiliary meet the first Monday each month. the auxiliary was organized by the late Mrs. Kate Patman.

Price family travels to Houston for father's surgery

Mr and Mrs Sammy Price and Becky left Thursday afternoon for Houston after his father fell gravely ill. The elder Mr Price had major surgery Monday at Methodist Hospital. His condition worsened Thursday morning, though earlier reports said he was improving. Jill Tipps of Ft Worth, niece of Kay and Steve Tipps, appeared in Six Flags Over Texas opening coverage beside the park’s new 300 foot oil derrick attraction. The park opens April 12. Upshur County Health Nurse will visit the American Legion Hut on Dallas Highway Tuesday 10 to 11 am offering free immunizations for children.

City grieves as Mrs Lillie Burney is killed in hit and run

Mrs Lillie R Burney, 68, was struck crossing West Upshur at Woodrow Street Friday afternoon and died at Municipal Hospital. City officials issued a statement pleading for information to aid police in the investigation. Authorities note a prior hit and run on December 29 near Clarksville City.

Mrs Smart Dies After Lengthy Illness at 64

Mrs. O. W. Ruth Lee Smart, 64, died Friday in a local hospital after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Sunday at 3 30 p.m. at Malcolm Stone Funeral Chapel with Rev. Filmer Kelley of Memorial Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Linden Texas.

East Texas Revue 21st Annual Musical Opens March 21

Ten U performers headline the 21st East Texas Revue written directed by Ken Bennett Gladewater High School. 21st 100 Years Old Rev George W Rogers

Jarvis Christian College notes Rev George W Rogers 100th birthday marked on Sunday March 16. Rogers arrived in 1919, worked as a carpenter and minister at Jarvis College Church in Hawkins Big Sandy area. Born 1869 in Cason Morris County Texas. Married Minnie Williams in 1911. They have been married about 57 years.
