Gladewater will host a June slow pitch softball tournament beginning June 26 after a successful event last year plus a city tennis tournament in the same period. Local teams and spectators anticipate strong competition and community participation.
Robert D Ferguson and Jenny Lee O Neal earn Dean's List honors at Texas Tech and East Texas State University. Jimmy Hardman suffers a serious head injury in Japan and remains in intensive care. Dennis R Smith begins OR technician training in San Diego after Navy hospital ward work. A tennis event is scheduled for June with a regional tourney in July and a bear park softball double elimination tournament with a 25 entry fee.
The body of 14 year old Ray Sanders was recovered by Kilgore Rescue Unit from Upshur County Recreation Park at Lake o the Pies early Tuesday after drowning Monday night. His body was found in 18 feet of water.
Clarksville's 2,219 metered customers consume about 1.5 million gallons daily amid a dry spell. Lake Gladewater remains abundant but officials warn levels could fall faster without rain. The lake watershed covers 35 miles and holds roughly 6,950 acre-feet of water.
Gladewater school board members toured Bear stadium this week and approved a major seating change. The north side becomes the visitors area for bands and general admission while the south side serves Gladewater and reserved seating. the band will take the first south section. The press box area will be reserved and the rest of the south remains reserved. The stadium’s steel underpinnings will be sandblasted and painted to improve appearance, with possible expansion of plastic seating similar to last summer.
John L Faulkinberry of the Mississippi State Department of Education has earned a PhD from the University of Southern Mississippi with a major in secondary education and a minor in English. His MA came from Baylor University in 1966 and his dissertation examined trends in rhetorical theory in 19th century American textbooks.

In Saturday's Texas Democratic primary runoff Dolph Briscoe led Gladewater with 628 votes to Frances Farenthold’s 152. Barefoot Sanders won the senate race 542 to 221 over Ralph Yarborough while Wayne Connally edged Bill Hobby 409 to 354 in lieutenant governor. Briscoe vs Grover set for November as he thanked supporters and promised an open efficient government.
The Hobo King Richard Wilson visited Gladewater on Friday night, meeting police, locals, and Mirror reporters before continuing to the national hobo convention in Britt Iowa. A 63 year old lifelong traveler, he has roamed most states, Canada and Mexico, carrying a 100 pound pack and earning $1,000 to $2,000 yearly from donations and odd jobs. He differentiates hobos from hippies and bums, advocates cleanliness, and hopes to marry a self supporting woman who shares his vegetarian preferences.
