Local church services and library book sale announced
Union Grove Baptist Church will host Wednesday and Thursday services led by Coach Hugh Mixon in Rev Her man Reagh’s absence. Friends of the Library plan a downtown book sale Tuesday June 10 from 10 a.m. to about 4 p.m. on the library lawn with backup space in a nearby building if needed. The event seeks donated books especially children's and paperbacks. Also announced is Mike Norfleet as the $200 PTA scholarship recipient to attend Kilgore College next fall. Dr Jack Suggs of Texas Christian University will speak at First Christian Church Sunday at 11 a.m. and is a former local pastor. A note mentions a farewell for the Gordon Mayers as their daughter Pati spends the summer in Germany and son Rick Mayer returns from Vietnam before reassignment to Altus Oklahoma in August 1970.

Baylor University awarded 893 degrees May 30 including two honorary doctorates in its 124 year history. John David Bates earned a BBA in finance and Tom M. Fender earned a BFA in commercial design. In Gladewater, James C. White died after a shooting at 322 Ragsdale. Lillie Mae White, 37, was charged with murder and jailed on $5,000 bond.

GHS Choir Students Win State Honors at UIL All-State
Glade water High School choir students who won at the District UIL contest competed in the All-State Choral event, with nine placements and a first in a winning trio Linda Loraine Martin Jane Dawson and Mickey Allen. Victory Rites Set Thursday for Mrs Birdie Victory
Funeral services for Mrs. Birdie Mae Victory lifelong Gladewater resident will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at St. Theresa's Catholic Church with Rev. Owens of Kilgore officiating. Burial will follow at Union Grove Cemetery. Born February 25, 1893 in Upshur County, she died Tuesday in Mother Frances Hospital Tyler. Survived by several nieces and nephews.

LeTourneau Rites Held Wednesday in Longview
Friends from across the United States attended the memorial service for R. G. LeTourneau, founder of LeTourneau College, who died Sunday.
