Oldest Steam Locomotive In Australia At Frankston Park
A Belgian-built Decauville locomotive from 1890 draws global rail historians to Frankston 20 miles south of Melbourne. It hauled coal for Melbourne’s Metropolitan Gas Works until 1940 and now ferries riders on a 2 ft 6 in track at Jack Griffiths 93 acre amusement park. The Light Railways Research Society says it is the oldest operating of its kind in Australia. The single carriage carries 70 passengers and about 6,000 have ridden it in six months. Two more carriages are under construction.
