Glade Men Jailed in Rape Case
Two Glade Water men were jailed in Smith County on Monday July 15 after rape charges were filed on behalf of two 13 year old Glade water girls. Carl Ray Thornton 27 and Harry Anderson Newell 26 were arrested with bond set at 10000. The alleged assault occurred July 14 near Gladewater and was reported to police Monday morning.

Gilmer Man Charged For Upshur Knifing
John A. Craig a 37 year old Gilmer man faces murder charges after the fatal stabbing of A. B. Bryant a Gilmer city employee. The incident happened near Pyeatt Drive just inside Upshur County. Bryant died at Gladewater Municipal Hospital after multiple abdominal wounds. Witnesses say three men and two women were in Bryant’s car following an argument. Authorities reported Bryant stabbed outside the car then drove into the woods before help arrived. The other three occupants were detained but not charged. Bond for Craig has not been set. Funeral services for Bryant were held at Mount Girard Baptist Church with burial at Zion Hill Cemetery by Turner Brothers Funeral Home. He is survived by his wife six children his parents and two brothers.

Revered angler misses trip for a call from the needy
Union Grove Baptist pastor Herman Reagh postponed a Lone Star Lake fishing trip to aid a man in need of spiritual guidance. After praying with the caller, he resumed fishing at Lake Gladewater and landed about a dozen large mouth bass, attributing luck to divine help.

Gladeites Learn Credit Evaluation In City Course
Theron Lee from the University of Texas led a Tuesday night session of a four day credit course sponsored by the Gladewater Credit Bureau and Chamber of Commerce. He urged use of the credit bureau for reliable risk information and stressed written credit policies and references beyond three names. The class attracted about 45 Gladewater enrollees. The final session was scheduled for Thursday night.

No official word on Saturday mail service cutbacks
Gladewater Postmaster J H Parish said no official or unofficial word had been received from Washington about Saturday mail service cuts. He noted the inspector in charge would not comment, and that postmasters could only say they know as much as the public. Parish rejected a congressman’s accusation of blackmail.

Glade Servicemen Awarded Medals in Vietnam
Army Warrant Officer James Connally of Gladewater received the Air Medal near Vinh Long for meritorious aerial flight during ground operations in Vietnam. Sgt. Larry Hines of Gladewater earned the Purple Heart for wounds in action. both servicemen were serving in the 1st Cavalry and 27th Engineer Battalion units respectively. Connally, 25, enlisted 1966 after school in Texas. Hines, 21, enlisted 1968 after Pine Tree High School.
