Gladewater police arrested Eugene Jones 27 Vernon Jones 18 and Gordon Coleman 17 on aggravated robbery charges for the Glade 7 11 store heist at 601 N Main. Bonds were set at 50000 35000 and 35000 with Vernon Jones released on bond.

Fourth Marines Reunite at WWII Hawaii Base Reunion Reflects Historic Fourth Marine Division

Clayton Mitchell and his wife Axie joined 370 fellow Marines and families in Hawaii for a reunion of the Fourth Marine Division. Mitchell, 18 when he joined, recalled Rat Namur Saipan Tinian and Iwo Jima campaigns, earning the Purple Heart and unit citations. They toured Oahu and Maui revisiting memories, Pearl Harbor, and the Punch Bowl while souvenirs recalled wartime service. The story highlights the division's rapid entry into combat from San Diego and the Saipan to Tinian to Iwo Jima campaigns and the development of forward bases in the Pacific.

Annexation study eyed for northeast city limits

City council plans a public hearing on ordinance 1101 for annexing about 109.1 acres northeast of the city, with a proposed 40 acre Bob Dooley subdivision of 50 homes. Hearing set for July 28 at 7:30 p.m. at city hall. first reading August 11. final on September 8. The area will not affect school districts and current homes total eight.

Gladeites Win Big In Regional TAAF Tennis Tourney

Gladewater players led in the region 6 TAAF tournament with multiple champions and finalists. Winners include Sharon Scurlock and Kathy Hill in women's open doubles. John Paul Tallent in men 35 singles. Joyce Erickson and James Walker in men 35 mixed doubles. Several other results listed with players from Gladewater and nearby towns advancing toward the state tournament in Longview.

City Zoning Board Plans Public Hearings on Four Requests

The City Planning and Zoning Commission will hold four public hearings at its next regular meeting on Thursday July 21 at 7 p.m. The hearings were previously postponed for lack of a quorum. Hearings include rezoning three 66 acre tracts east of U S Highway 771 to LC, rezoning Gladeview Addition lots to NS, rezoning part of G Thomason Survey from oil field to SF8, and condemnation of Frank Collins Addition Lots 4 and 5 Block 5 per the building official.

Funeral services held for George W. Combs in Mt Carmel Ill

George W. Combs 74 of 111 Bobo Street died Saturday after a long illness. Funeral services were at Mt Carmel United Methodist Church with Cunningham Funeral Home in charge. Burial followed in Mt Carmel. He moved to Gladewater to live with daughter Laura Boque and is survived by daughter Geraldine Houser and son George S. Combs, Bedford Ind, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Born January 2, 1903, in Mt Carmel, he was a retired railroad man. He was preceded in death by wives Effie Irene Combs and Rhea Grace Combs.
