Gladewater Rotarians installed their 1972 73 officers at a Thursday night dinner at the St. Clair Restaurant. Rev Irby D Bates of Longview served as installing officer and praised the club while urging growth and stronger Rotary Foundation support. Dr Walter Henry received the Bull Thrower's award, Eddie Nelson thanked the board, and Kizer was installed as president with Poston Herbst and Dake named to key posts.

City reports first quarter sales tax total
The city secretary reports the first quarter 1972 sales tax share at 20,584.65 dollars, per the state comptroller. This quarter trails the prior Christmas period but rises from early 1970 and 1971 figures, with yearly totals reaching 67,464.08 in 1970 and 80,563.71 in 1971.

Grand opening of Dairy Queen in Gladewater
A grand opening and ribbon cutting for a new large Dairy Queen was held Friday with Mayor C G Johnston presiding. Owners Mr and Mrs Johnny Dishman assisted. Chamber of Commerce directors attended. Rev Conrad Winborn gave the invocation. The existing building at Money Street and U S Highway 80 East is being demolished for remodeling.

Mrs Kate Odom Injured In Two Car Collision
Mrs Kate Odom is in the intensive care unit at Good Shepherd Hospital Longview after a two car crash on East Highway 80. The accident near White Oak left her with a crushed chest broken pelvis broken wrist and other injuries. Police urge blood donors calling 845 2166 at the Gladewater police station.

Four honored at Union Grove barbeque dinner
Union Grove school board honored four veterans at a barbecue at the school. Attendees included Upshur County Sept and Mrs Norman Tuel and new superintendent Robert A Cooper. Garland Ferguson received a plaque after 26 years with Union Grove, as he moves to Gladewater. his wife Bonnie teaches third grade. Three retiring teachers also received plaques: Bernice Reeves with 38 years, Bea Wood with 33 years, and Arielene Howard with 28 years total teaching. McCrary praised each retiree.

GHS Ag Teacher Herman Williams Resigns After 30 Years
Herman Williams, veteran Vocational Agriculture teacher at GHS, submitted a resignation letter effective August 1 to Supt. Roy Johnson. A native of Anderson County and SHSU graduate, Williams cited personal reasons and plans no immediate teaching future. He has led a long career with community roles and family ties near the city.

DPS director Colonel Wilson E. Speir announces Operation Motorcide a joint Texas effort with state agencies local police and media to reduce holiday traffic deaths.
