Jim Lee Dies After Lengthy Illness in Gladewater
Jim Lee, 80, longtime Gladewater resident, died Tuesday morning in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Memorial Park. He was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. He is survived by sister Ethel Thurber of Gladewater, two stepsons Doss Hunt of Gladewater and Mack Hunt of Tyler, and a stepsdaughter Lecie Foster of Longview.

Omaha man buys controlling stake in Hawkins bank
Randy G. Moore of Omaha purchased controlling interest in the First State Bank of Hawkins after the State Banking Commissioner approved an increase of capital stock from 500 to 1,500 shares. Moore, president of the State Bank of Omaha, also owns controlling interest in the Lone Star State Bank. At a Jan 9 shareholders meeting, Moore was elected chairman of the board and W C Kirkham was named president. Kirkham previously led the Lone Star Bank from 1968 onward.

Twirling Festival draws 900 entrants at GHS
More than 900 participants including twirlers majorettes and dancers competed in the second annual Twirling Festival at GHS. About 300 trophies and 700 medals were awarded. The event ran 8 30 a m to 6 p m with a twirl off. Winners included Carla Troboy Rhondhia Young Debbie Philpot Jessica Walston Deborah Hancock Barbara Davis and Terri Bailey among others.
