Jim Lee Dies After Lengthy Illness in Gladewater

Jim Lee, 80, longtime Gladewater resident, died Tuesday morning in a local hospital after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Malcolm Stone Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Memorial Park. He was a member of the Worldwide Church of God. He is survived by sister Ethel Thurber of Gladewater, two stepsons Doss Hunt of Gladewater and Mack Hunt of Tyler, and a stepsdaughter Lecie Foster of Longview.

Omaha man buys controlling stake in Hawkins bank

Randy G. Moore of Omaha purchased controlling interest in the First State Bank of Hawkins after the State Banking Commissioner approved an increase of capital stock from 500 to 1,500 shares. Moore, president of the State Bank of Omaha, also owns controlling interest in the Lone Star State Bank. At a Jan 9 shareholders meeting, Moore was elected chairman of the board and W C Kirkham was named president. Kirkham previously led the Lone Star Bank from 1968 onward.

Twirling Festival draws 900 entrants at GHS

More than 900 participants including twirlers majorettes and dancers competed in the second annual Twirling Festival at GHS. About 300 trophies and 700 medals were awarded. The event ran 8 30 a m to 6 p m with a twirl off. Winners included Carla Troboy Rhondhia Young Debbie Philpot Jessica Walston Deborah Hancock Barbara Davis and Terri Bailey among others. Local sponsors included First State Bank Ford Office Supply and Dairy Queen.

Gladewater Round-up Rodeo draws top talent for 37th edition

The Gladewater Round-up Rodeo enters its 37th year with June 13 to 16 slated in the all steel arena. Association President Jack Phillips reports RCA convention talks in Denver shaped this year’s schedule and highlights acts by Wilbur Plaugher Johnny Wilson and Jimmy Parish. Bill Minick of Ft Worth provides stock including V-61 with 96-point history. Chuck Parkinson will announce as in years past. Directors reaffirm Phillips as president and spell out new and returning officers.

Defensive driving course offered in Kilgore

An eight hour defensive driving course for adults will be sponsored by Region VII Education Service Center in Kilgore starting 7 p.m. Monday January 22. Classes meet Mondays and Thursdays January 22 25 29 and February 1 from 7 to 9 p.m. in room 201 of the Region VII building on Ross Avenue. The course costs 10 dollars and completes with a 10 percent auto insurance discount for principal drivers. Instructor is J. T. Russell. State Board delays school financing action until early 1972

The State Board of Education votes to postpone a financing plan funded entirely by state money, aiming for February or March. A new finance committee is proposed to review Nov. 11 recommendations, with the old board waiting on Jan. 1 to involve new members. The 1971 federal ruling on property tax based funding and a potential Supreme Court decision loom over the decision.
